Mgeni further admitted that Mziwamadoda Qwabe shot and killed Anni Dewani while he was fighting her while grabbing her handbag. Mngeni was also allowed to speak to an intermediary named “Monde Mbolombo”, who was arrested by the police on 18 November 2010.
In a statement to police, Mziwamadoda Qwabe said the couple were victims of a robbery. During further investigations, Qwabe changed his statement within five hours of his first statement that husband Shrien Dewani was the mastermind of his wife’s murder. On November 20, 2021, taxi driver Zola Tongo also admitted that Shrien Dewani planned to murder his wife.
He also claimed that Shrien paid the gang £1,400 to kill his wife. The robber, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, was sentenced in February 2011 to 25 years’ imprisonment under section 105A.
A second robber, Xolile Mngeni, was also given a life sentence, but during the court session he fell victim to a brain tumor, which he died on 18 October 2014 at the Goodwood Centre of Excellence Prison.
Taxi driver ‘Zola Tongo’ has been sentenced to 18 years in Malmesbury. In 2014, Shrien Dewani was cleared of all murder charges as he proved himself innocent and placed the blame on the three main defendants.
Following the sentencing, Anni Dewani’s family said in a media briefing outside the courtroom that the right to know “why Anni was killed” was denied after Shrien was acquitted by the court. they said,
