The journey of life
Angela Evelyn Bassett was born on August 16, 1958 in New York City, USA, by Daniel Benjamin Bassett and Betty Jane. Her father was an electrician and her mother was a nursing assistant.
When she was only 10 months old, her parents sent her to Winston-Salem to live with her father’s sister, Aunt Golden. Her parents split up soon after, and her mother took her and her sister D’nette to St. Petersburg, Florida, to live with her grandparents.
Angela would arrive at church on Sunday and be part of the minority choir. She likes to listen to the popular “Motor City” on the radio, and her mother often makes her and her sister dance to the song. Afterwards, a woman near them supported them to form a dance group.
Her mother was lazy in high school, didn’t want her children to suffer the same fate, and paid extra attention to how they were doing in school. Angela follows “Boca Ciega High School” as a representative of the “Upward Bound” program. She has also been a member of the Review Group, Student Council, Drama Club and Choir.
In 1980, she received a BA in African American Studies from Yale University. Three years later, she received her MFA at the Yale School of Drama.
