Gibb celebrated his 30th birthday in London on March 5, 1988, while working on his new album.
Two days after celebrating his birthday, he was admitted to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford with chest pains.
On March 10, 1988, around 8:30 a.m., Gibb’s doctor told him that more tests were needed to determine the cause of his chest pain. Later that day, Gibb fell into a coma and died of myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle caused by years of cocaine abuse that severely weakened his heart.
The diagnosis was supported by William Shell, a cardiologist who had previously treated Gibb. With the news of Gibb’s death, his ex-wife Kim Reid was not surprised. “I always knew I would get news like this one day. It’s just a matter of time.” The Gibbs also insist that, as some media reports have suggested, it wasn’t an overdose that killed Gibbs, but rather Natural causes after years of substance abuse.

A year later, after releasing his first album of singers, he released his second album called Shadow Dancing – 1978. It’s a multi-platinum record, and its title leads the charts. His professional success had nothing to do with the substance abuse problem he was addressing.
In the 80s, things got worse even after he released his last album, After Dark – 1980. Soon his substance abuse got better and cost him his job. Previously, he was co-host on the Solid Gold show. He later lost his position for not going to work. This also happened on Broadway, as he was fired for starring in Joseph and the Magical Colorful Dreamcoat.
