Arka Jagnik was born on March 20, 1966 (Age 53; as in 2019) in Kolkata, India. Her mother Shubha Yagnik, also a singer of Indian classical music, trained Alka to sing since she was a child. She studied at the Modern Girls High School in Kolkata, India. She started singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) at the age of six, where she translated devotional songs for the radio. She came to Mumbai at the age of 10 as a children’s singer. She was told to wait until her voice matured. Her sign/Sun sign is Pisces.

She started singing for Kolkata Radio at the age of six.She started her Bollywood career in 1979 with just a few lines in Rasjshri’s song “Payal ki Jhankar”
It was followed by “Mere Angne Mein,” which proved to be a big hit. Her first solo piece was “Hum Tum Rahenge” for Rajesh Roshan in Hamari Bahu Alka (1982). She finally got her first break with the song “Ek Do Teen” in the movie Tezaab.

She sings not only in Urdu-Hindi but also in other languages ββincluding Gujarati, Awadi, Odia, Assamese, Metai, Rajasthani, Bengali , Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, English and Malayalam. From Kalyanji-Anandji to Sandesh Shandilya, she has worked with almost all the best known Indian composers.
During her career spanning three decades, she has performed various songs with singers such as Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu, Sonu Nigam, Shaan and many others. Throughout her career, she sang 2,486 Hindi songs in 1,114 films. She is said to be the fifth Bollywood singer after Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar.
