The journey of life
Alfredo James Pacino was born on April 25, 1940, in East Harlem, New York City. He is the son of Italian-American parents Rose Gerardi and Salvatore Pacino. His parents separated when he was two years old. He then traveled with his mother to the Bronx to live with Kate and James Gerardi, Italian immigrants from Corleone, Sicily.
Pacino’s father, originally from San Fratello, Sicily, traveled to Covina, California, as an insurance salesman and restaurateur. During his teenage years, Pacino was considered “Sonny” by his friends. He aspired to be a baseball player, also known as an “actor”. He attended Herman Reed Junior High School but soon dropped out of anything but English.
So, after being admitted by audition, he entered the Performing Arts High School. His mother objected to his decision, and after an argument, he left the home. To finance his acting studies, Pacino took low-paying jobs as courier, waiter, doorman, and postal clerk, and also worked in the Mailroom for Review magazine.
Pacino started smoking and drinking at age 9 and casually smoking marijuana at age 13, but he did not use drugs. Two of his closest friends died of drug addiction at the age of 19 and 30. Growing up in the Bronx, Pacino had occasional fights and was considered a troublemaker in school. He performed in basements and operated underground theaters in New York, but was denied by the Actors Studio as a teenager.
Pacino joined HB Studios, where he met playing teacher Charlie Laughton, who became his mentor and best friend. During this period, he was often unemployed and homeless, sometimes sleeping on the street, in the theater or at a friend’s house.
In 1962, Pacino’s mother died at the age of 43. The following year, his grandfather James also died. It was the lowest point of his life, Pacino recalled, saying, “I was 22 and two of the most powerful people in my life were gone, and it sent me into a mess.”

Al made $35,000 for his role in the first “The Godfather” in 1972. That’s the same about $215,000 today after adjusting for expansion. For the second godfather, his salary was raised to $500,000, or $2.6 million in today’s dollars. What’s more, he won 10% of the film’s total box office after breaking even, which would translate into tens of millions in bonus profits over time.
For the third installment, Al asked for $7 million, plus a percentage of gross revenue before costs, with Francis Ford Coppola ignoring or even dreading making the opening scene of the third film, Michael Corleone’s funeral. Al eventually accepted $5 million.
Pacino received $1.5 million for 1992’s “Glen Gary Glen Rose” and $6 million for 1993’s “Road to Carlito.” By the mid-1990s, he was making more than $100,000 per film, big and small. For example, he made $11 million for “S1m0ne” in 2002, a relative bomb of his career.
Al signed a multi-year deal with HBO to provide him with a fixed payday of $10 million for any feature film he starred in for the network. So far, three films have been offered through the deal, “You Don’t Know Jack,” “Paterno,” and “Phil Spector.”
