Ahmed Patel was born on Sunday 21 August 1949 (71; at the time of death) in Piraman Village, Bharuch District, Gujarat. His full name is Ahmedbhai Mohammedbhai Patel. In 1976, he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) from the Shree Jayendrapuri Puri College of Arts and Sciences, Baruch, Surat South Gujarat University. While in college, he played in the cooperative banking movement with his father. After this, he was involved in public service. Later, he participated in the Indian Youth Congress. He rose from the grassroots, and his skills and loyalty to the party helped him become one of the top politicians in the Indian National Congress (INC).

Patel is the son of Mohammed Ishikji Patel (father) and Hawaben Mohammedbhai (mother). He is the third child of his parents. His father, Mohammed Ishakji, was one of the pioneers of the cooperative union movement in South Gujarat in the 1960s, which raised voices against the exploitation of small borrowers by private financiers.

He married Memoona Ahmed Patel in 1976. Memoona comes from a family of freedom fighters who worked closely with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Political career
In 1976, at the age of 27, Ahmed Patel successfully participated in the local body elections in his village of Piraman with votes from the Indian National Congress, thus starting the his political career. Impressed by Patel’s work, in 1977, after the internal emergency was lifted, the Indian National Congress (INC) sent him from the Baruch Lok Sabha constituency ahead of the 1977 Lok Sabha elections. As a result, he won his first Lok Sabha election by a huge margin of over 63,000 votes, beating Unia Suleman Essuf of the Janata Party. He then won subsequent Lok Sabha elections in 1980 and 1984, retaining the seat for two consecutive terms. In 1984, he joined Arun Singh and Oscar Fernandez as the first parliamentary secretary to the newly elected Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
During the Rajiv Gandhi government in 1986, he was responsible for leading the Gujarat division of the INC and held that position for the next two years. He was first elected as Rajya Sabha in 1995 and later served four terms. In 2001, he was appointed secretary to the Indian National Congress (INC) President Sonia Gandhi until 2017.
From 2018 until his death in November 2020, he was Treasurer of the All India Congress Committee.

On Wednesday, November 25, 2020, Ahmed Patel died at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram due to multiple organ failure more than a month after testing positive for COVID-19. Ahmed Patel’s remains are buried next to the graves of his parents in his ancestral village of Piraman.
