- Zack Ryder was an avid WWE (then WWF) fan in his youth, so much so that he collects and keeps hundreds of wrestling toys in his home to this day.
- In high school, Ryder was diagnosed with cancer that had spread from his feet to both of his lungs. However, the aspiring wrestler miraculously survived surgery and regular chemotherapy.
- Ryder started his wrestling career with the New York Wrestling League (NYWC) in 2004 under the name Brett Matthews.
- Just a year after his NYWC debut, Ryder got a chance to appear on WWE TV. On episodes of SmackDown, he played the local crew in a match against former WWE Superstar Matt Morgan. The following year, Ryder officially signed with WWE and was assigned to their now-defunct Georgia Deep South Wrestling Development.
- After sporadic appearances on ECW and SmackDown, Ryder expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the company pushed him. Failing to find a convincing idea from this WWE creative, he took it upon himself to launch a YouTube web series – Z! The real Long Island story, promoting his gimmick/character.
