• She was born in Syria and grew up in Damascus (Syria’s capital).

• The Syrian Olympic Committee supports her swimming training.

• She competed in the 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter freestyle at the 2012 World Aquatics Championships.

• In August 2015, when the Syrian civil war destroyed her house, she decided to flee Syria with her sister Sarah. They arrived in Turkey via Lebanon and were smuggled into Greece by a boat with 18 other refugees. The ship’s engine failed midway through the Aegean, as the ship’s carrying capacity did not exceed 6-7 people. Yusra and her sister pushed the boat for nearly three hours to reach Lesbos. They then traveled through Europe to Germany and settled in Berlin.

• In June 2016, she was selected to represent the Refugee Olympic Athletes (ROA) squad under the Olympic flag. She also competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Maldini carried the flag of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team during the opening ceremony.
