yes god yes an underrated gem
Every year, most viewers miss a standalone feature that brings us to the underrated gem of 2019, yes god yes. The film stars Natalia Dyer as Alice, a Catholic girl still struggling to find her place in the world. After the chat with AOL turned heated, the religious girl had thoughts of intimacy and sex that jeopardized her place in the Catholic community. I must first warn that I am not Catholic and don’t know much about religion itself. This article will only explore the topics discussed in the film, not a personal attack on Catholics and the religion as a whole. yes god yes It’s a small movie. It doesn’t have stunning cinematography or grand, exotic sets, and even though this low-budget feature isn’t as visually appealing as most films today, its message is louder than most extravagant blockbusters. Yes, God, yes, Not just about religion and the hypocrisy of followers, it’s a coming-of-age story that focuses on a key part of every teen’s life as they’re still trying to explore the world around them.
Growing up as a devout Christian, I understand how religion consumes and preserves your life. As a child, you were told that certain things were wrong and that if you didn’t follow God’s view of the world, you would go to hell. I won’t delve into religion, but I want to explain how daunting it can be to grow up in a religious world, especially for impressionable young people. Susan Blackwell’s Gina put it best, “No one knows what we’re doing better than the rest of us. We’re all just trying to figure out our shit.” yes god yes Not only through Alice, but through Father Murphy, Wade, and Nina, who have done an excellent job of exploring this topic. Alice’s entire predicament began with rumors about throwing away Wade Salad. The suspect in the case denies he was the one who started the gossip in the first place; however, it’s clear that Wade’s true intentions were: to maintain his blunt appearance. Religion isn’t gay friendly, and when it’s revealed that Wade is also watching porn through Father Murphy’s computer, you’ll feel bad for him right away. The film highlights how outdated messages and themes in religion affect modern society.
Of course, yes god yes Didn’t really delve into the subject. The film is more of a coming-of-age story than a harsh exposure of Catholicism. It does, however, point to the difficulty modern society has with an outdated set of standards. Even Father Murphy could not resist the temptation of his religious rules.Arguably the biggest mistake yes god yes Yes, despite its rich themes, it’s light and effortless. The film is thought-provoking in context; however, some of the issues raised in the film don’t get the exposure they deserve. Still, it’s a great movie, with Natalia Dyer’s performance throughout. As a man, obviously I will never understand the issues that women deal with on a daily basis. However, gender is not the focus of the film. Everyone understands that being a young person doesn’t fully understand the world around them. Alice is a docile and shy girl who doesn’t even look like the kind of woman who doesn’t try to toss other people’s salads until she’s 40. Yet, as each day goes by, she still struggles to understand life and the way the young girl succumbs to her sexual temptations in the first half of the film. She slowly discovers that it is not a sin to act on these temptations by witnessing pious Nina serving a man outside the kitchen window, Father Murphy’s dirty little secret, and her sincere and heartfelt conversation with Gina passes through Dale’s body language is artfully displayed and mannered. yes god yes Good at “show, don’t tell”; Karen Maine clearly believes that her audience is smart enough to understand the story being told, and in turn, the film flows naturally as it doesn’t get bogged down by clunky presentations. All in all, this little indie gem is a must-see for movie lovers everywhere. It doesn’t quite get to the roots of its religious themes, and it’s far from the flashiest or most visually appealing movie you’ve ever seen; however, this character-driven work is definitely a coming-of-age story worth your time.
