Wilson Fisk is back, and what this means for the MCU

If you like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’ve probably been watching Hawkeye. Which means you see Wilson Fisk making a small cameo at the end of the finale. Now, if you’ve been following news about the show like I am, the character has been rumored to be returning for some time. Well, guess what, Marvel fans? The rumors are of course true. Guess that means you can actually believe some of the rumors, right? I mean, let’s appreciate the fact that the very amazing Vincent D’Onofrio has reprised the role. Every Marvel fan should know that Vincent D’Onofrio played Wilson Fisk in Netflix’s Daredevil series from 2015 to 2018. He wasn’t known as Kingpin until season three. I’m so excited that we’ll be able to see his take on Wilson Fisk evolve into the kingpin that we comic nerds are familiar with. Now admit, his version is in a show that’s more street-based and grounded, but those Netflix shows are a thing of the past.
Kevin Feige insists on keeping MCU characters under his own roof, and rightfully so. All Marvel characters that exist in other Marvel shows were created by people who weren’t Kevin Feige. That’s certainly a big deal, since Marvel decided to go ahead with Disney+ shows after all Netflix shows were canceled. We should see this as Marvel saying goodbye to those past shows and rebooting Marvel shows with Disney+. The key difference is that these shows are under the supervision of Kevin Feige. Yes, that probably applies to ABC shows too. At least in most cases. So what does this mean for eagle-eyed Wilson Fisk? If Kevin Feige and Marvel want to move on from past shows, then why bring Vincent D’Onofrio back to reprise the role? Well, on the one hand, Vincent D’Onofrio is as shocking as Wilson Fisk. Anyone who’s seen the show knows that, including Kevin Feige himself. Recasting the villain will be a tough move that could disappoint fans. If Kevin Feige approves of Vincent D’Onofrio’s stunning performance, it’s not hard to believe why he brought him back. Of course, we will welcome him back with open arms.
The thing is, even if Vincent D’Onofrio comes back, I don’t think he’ll play the Wilson Fisk he played on the Daredevil show. I’m guessing Wilson Fisk from The Hawkeye will reimagine his vision of the character. Charlie Cox’s recent remarks about Matt Murdoch sound familiar. Now I’m going to talk about the rumors about Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil. As every Marvel fan should know by now, there are rumors that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch will appear in Spider-Man: No Way Out, right around the corner. With Hawkeye’s latest episode revealing the existence of Wilson Fisk in the MCU, it really confirms what we’ve been suspecting. Is it a coincidence that this episode came so close to the release date of Spider-Man: Nowhere? I don’t think so. That’s some strategic planning from Marvel, and with Wilson Fisk finally returning, I think we can safely assume that Matt Murdoch’s return is imminent.
This is great news for us Marvel fans. Hawkeye’s final episode airs next Wednesday, and we can finally see Wilson Fisk in action again. One of the biggest differences between this new Wilson Fisk version and the Netflix version is that the Disney+ version will likely be more comically accurate. The Netflix version is more down-to-earth, but there’s definitely still those comic elements to him. For example, his white suit, his massive size, his backstory and, of course, his bald head. It’s something we can all expect to see in the Hawkeye finale, but I think he looks more like the comic book version. Either way, I think the return of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk means we’re going to see more of the Marvel characters we’ve seen before. Hopefully that means Charlie Cox will really be back as Matt Murdoch, along with Kristen Ritter as Jessica Jones and especially Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. Marvel could certainly come up with a place for these specific characters. Of course, they have to be toned down a bit since they’ll be on Disney+, but it could be an interesting modification. I mean, it sounds weird to see a criminal whose Punisher didn’t make blood with his gun. However, we can still see him as a gun-wielding vigilante, shooting at non-human enemies. That way, Disney and Marvel don’t have to worry about showing us blood. Personally, I think we can trust Kevin Feige and Marvel to bring back characters and actors worthy of returning. Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk is certainly one of them, and I can’t wait to see this new version of him in the Hawkeye finale. Again, this likely means we’ll see Charlie Cox in Spider-Man: Nowhere again. Marvel fans, what do you think?
