Will Rogue Squadron really happen because of the delay?

One of the most unexpected surprises of last year’s Disney Investor Day was the announcement of Rogue Squadron. Now I have to be honest, I never played those games or read those specific books. For the record, I’ve played a lot of Star Wars games and read a lot of Star Wars books. I’m a Star Wars fanatic, but I’ve never been drawn to the entire Rogue Squadron story. I just know it’s a Star Wars story about pilots. I mean, haven’t we figured it out with Luke Skywalker? Heck, we almost got Anakin Skywalker. Personally, I’d prefer to see more Star Wars stories about runaway Jedi, rogue Empire soldiers, or they could stick with the Disney+ show. Honestly, over the past few years, these shows have been much better at Star Wars than the movies. The last movie we got from Star Wars was The Rise of Skywalker, which was a pretty big disappointment. We want to thank people like The Mandalorian for keeping fans interested because it’s just that good. I hope the shows below are just as good, but come on, we want some great movies back. This is where it all started. With that in mind, we need to talk about the next big Star Wars movie we’re going to make.
No, this isn’t a Kevin Feige movie or Taika Vititi, although I’d love to see what they’ll do. The biggest surprise from Disney’s Investor Day Star Wars was Patty Jenkins’ announcement that she’s working on a Squadron of Rogues movie. Not only did she announce it, but she announced it in a spectacular way. She actually walked off the runway, donned a Rebel pilot uniform, and got ready to board the life-size X-Wing. Boy, that’s a pretty good site. I know I said I wasn’t very interested in Rogue Squadron movies, but this demo alone piqued my interest. It should be noted that this is a passion project of Patty Jenkins. The fact that her father was a fighter pilot gave her the perfect motivation to pursue the Rogue Squadron movie. Just listening to her talk about it tells you how passionate she is about making this movie. After seeing what she did to Wonder Woman, I had no hesitation in her directing a Star Wars movie, even if I didn’t fully agree with this particular story. Rogue Squadron was originally slated to come out in 2023, but with recent news about it being delayed, it raises some questions. What is the reason for the delay? Oh, just a creative difference, that’s all. I just want to ask, how many times do we hear these questions between Kathleen Kennedy and her director? Now, to be honest, it’s just a bad habit, and worse, the expectation of her bringing in a new director. I might jump to some dramatic conclusions here, but I have a bad feeling that Rogue Squadron probably won’t happen. By the way, no puns there.
Am I really overreacting here? Well, you just have to look at the history of the working relationship between Kathleen Kennedy and the director she hired for the film. You can see how things fell apart between her and Colin Trevorrow, which is probably why The Rise of Skywalker turned out to be a disappointment. But Colin Trevorrow isn’t the only director to have had a “creative difference” with Katherine Kennedy. We can talk about Phil Lord and Chris Miller who were fired due to the creative differences of the Solo movie, even though they were almost done shooting. Or we could point to the problems Rogue One had when Tony Gilroy had to step in at the last minute and reshoot. Even he described it as a swamp. Now, there are often creative differences between directors and producers. This is an industry where many artists tend to disagree on many things. It’s easy to blame directors for not following suit, but when you put your creative talents on the line, you have every say. In the case of Rogue Squadron, I don’t think Patty Jenkins will give up and give up on the project. Again, you just have to listen to her talk about it and you’ll see how enthusiastic she is. If she doesn’t tell the story, then I have a feeling she’s missing out on a rare opportunity.
But I have to wonder how far this little battle of creative differences can go? We’ve seen it go south quickly in one too many projects in the past, which doesn’t bode well for a Star Wars movie. If this continues, and it probably continues, then it could lead to another Star Wars movie falling apart because of creative differences. It would be a real shame if it did, but my optimists like to think Kathryn Kennedy and Patty Jenkins will fix things. However, I cannot forget the fact that she has developed a habit of arguing with multiple directors over creative differences. Since this is delayed, there’s a chance it won’t even be released in 2023. In the best case scenario, Patty Jenkins and Kathleen Kennedy agree and production is back on track. It might come out later than originally planned, but at least we’ll get it. We should certainly consider more unfortunate options. If Rogue Squadron doesn’t happen because of creative differences, as it’s been a few times before, it’s going to be a missed opportunity. Seriously, does Rogue Squadron sound like fan service? Fans do love the story, but I wonder if you can make it into a movie. If anyone could, it would be Patty Jenkins. Anyway, I just wish she had a chance to tell the story she wanted to tell. Star Wars fans, what do you think? Do you think Rogue Squadron will appear or be shelved? I hope it’s the former, it’s just because of Patty Jenkins. This is the passion project she needs to tell.
