Will Daniel Ricciardo find his McLaren form in Baku?
Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Will Baku see Daniel Ricciardo find his form at McLaren? The Australian Formula 1 driver’s time with the Woking team has yet to begin after leaving Renault in the winter. Meanwhile, his teammate Lando Norris has already made two podiums.
Ricardo travels to Baku this weekend from a disappointing Monaco. He qualified half a second slower than Norris. The race started and he was one lap behind in 12th, while the Briton was on the podium in third.
It marked Norris’ second podium of the year after five rounds and third in the drivers’ championship in Azerbaijan. Ricciardo finished eighth with 24 of the Briton’s 56 as he continued to master his machine.
Ricciardo isn’t the only Formula 1 driver struggling to get used to the new car. Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz have all had mixed or lackluster starts. For Ricciardo, the main issue is corner entry and braking, two areas where he usually excels.

What brought Ricciardo back to McLaren?
Ricciardo has long been considered the last brakeman in Formula 1, his car dancing on the edge. But after leaving Renault in the winter, the Australian has struggled to overtake McLaren’s team.
He likened the learning process to “going back to school” after qualifying for P7 at last month’s Spanish Grand Prix. Due to the McLaren’s sensibilities, especially slow corners can be troublesome for the 31-year-old compared to faster ones.
“It’s like being a beginner all over again, like self-taught around every corner,” he said, by quoting motorsport“Whether it’s the way you brake or step on the gas. Some are unique and I think I still need to be a little aware of that and teach myself enough to make it natural.”
Ricardo not underestimated The difficulty of changing a machine after two years at Renault. But when the Australian signed a contract, the learning curve took longer than he and the team wanted 10 million euros/quarter (£9m) on a three-year contract.

What previous successes has Ricardo had in Baku?
Ricciardo has hit the streets of Baku in the past, although results are not always guaranteed. He finished third at Red Bull in the 2016 race, when he was called the European Grand Prix when Formula 1 made his first visit to the Caspian Sea.
A head restraint problem for Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and a penalty from then-Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel gave Ricciardo the win in 2017. He had dropped to 17th in the opening round of the renamed Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but then rushed back into the field.
Ricciardo was forced to pit early on lap six to clear debris from the brakes. Helps keep him nervous during the safety car as he struggles to support the order. Passed Williams’ Lance Stroll and Felipe Massa at the first turn on a restart.
This move demonstrates Ricciardo’s strength as a late braker and will eventually reclaim the race lead. Once Hamilton and Vettel were in the pits, his fifth of seven Grand Prix victories in his F1 career was smooth sailing.

Ricardo’s pain in Baku in 2018 and 2019
Ricciardo returned to Baku in 2018 as the defending champion of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but with far less success. His race will end in contact with his teammate Max Verstappen, the two dueling for the fourth and fifth positions.
Verstappen and Ricciardo swapped places for most of the laps, although the Australian trailed his Red Bull stables after the pit stop. To regain position, Ricciardo sent a late sprint into the Dutchman’s inside at Turn 1, but neither could see Turn 2.
When Ricciardo pointed the front of the car to Verstappen’s left, the Dutchman suddenly changed direction to try to cover. The second move was illegal, but to make matters worse, the downforce on the Australian’s front wing caused him to lock up.

Ricciardo squeezed into the back seat of Verstappen’s car, sending the pair into the decider and ending their race. After moving to Renault in 2019, Ricciardo admits the team’s handling of the consequences was consider his decision Left feeling unfairly accused.
The following year, he returned to Baku with the French manufacturer, but failed to make up for the disaster of 2019. While trying to pass Daniil Kvyat, he fell into Toro Rosso after his brakes overspeeded, trying to rejoin the track too quickly. It ends their two games, with 2021 now offering a chance of redemption after last year’s event Cancel due to the epidemic.
