Why was Lewis Hamilton booed by some of the fans present during a TV interview after qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix? Have other drivers been booed in the past?
In the qualifying session at Yas Marina, Hamilton was the fastest driver in qualifying and was pulled to pole by Verstappen in the final leg of the race.
The Red Bull driver took pole position in the final race at Yas Island three out of ten.
Verstappen will use the faster soft tyres – which wear out faster, while Hamilton will use the slower but more durable mid-size Pirelli.
But as he climbed out of his Mercedes and was giving his World TV interview, Hamilton was booed by part of the crowd.

Hamilton booed in Abu Dhabi
The seven-time world champion is no stranger to booing the crowd from time to time.
He was booed at the Zandvoort Home Grand Prix in Verstappen in September, and that’s what happened.
Part of the reason Hamilton was booed was Verstappen’s growing popularity with new F1 fans.
Recently, F1 has grown exponentially in gaining new fans and in new markets around the world.
- Revealed: Why Max Verstappen is at the edge and at the disadvantage at the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
It’s driven by the success of Netflix, drive to survive Documentary series, F1 is finally gaining a foothold in the US market it covets.
Verstappen’s popularity among Dutch fans has seen the Dutch Grand Prix restart in 2020 after 35 years – albeit delayed to 21 years due to Covid-19.
Just as football or NFL fans have the right to boo a player they don’t particularly like, so do F1 spectators when they’re interviewed for their not-favorite driver.
What other drivers have been booed in F1?
Usually, if a driver keeps winning, he gets booed on the podium or in a Channel World TV interview.
Take Sebastian Vettel in 2013, for example.
He won nine races in a row in the second half of the season – an F1 record – and was regularly booed on the podium.
It could also have something to do with the Malaysian Grand Prix fiasco when he defied team orders to take victory from Red Bull teammate Mark Webber…

Nico Rosberg was memorably booed on the podium after finishing second at the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix.
That was when he crashed into Hamilton on the second lap, causing a flat tire on his sister Mercedes.
Car No. 44 will eventually be retired as car No. 6 has 18 championship points.
Hamilton himself was booed early on – especially in Brazil.
It might have something to do with his title fight with a Brazilian Ferrari driver in 2008…
But since then, and his love for Brazilian icon Ayrton Senna, Hamilton is now regularly cheered by the Brazilian crowd.
That was the case at the recent Sao Paulo Grand Prix – he won.
The final qualifying round of the season was an unforgettable championship matchup on Sunday 📺
