Why Sansa Stark should be chosen for the throne
nearly three years game of Thrones The finale and final season of HBO’s beloved show still leaves a sour taste in many people’s mouths. One of the big talking points is about Daenerys Targaryen suddenly playing a delusional and power-hungry dictator. Or the dragon strangely melted the throne after Daenerys was murdered. Or Jon Snow saves the kingdom after a mad queen burns innocent men, women and children, but he’s punished anyway. Oh, and let’s not forget that Arya randomly decides to explore the open world. However, we’re here to talk about arguably the most shocking thing about the ending: Bran Stark being chosen as Westeros’ next ruler. We’ve gone from a man of honor (Ned Stark) to a mean, power-hungry, cruel monster (Joffrey) to an emotional, humble, polite, manipulative little boy , apparently not ready for the throne (Tomman), Cersei, who is a mix of Joffrey and Tywin, but not a violent psychopath, but a cunning vixen, and finally a delusional and too Mighty Queen (Daenerys).
Here’s the thing, for the most part, David Benioff and DB Weiss have done a great job of showing the different types of rulers and how their personalities affect their rule over Westeros. King Joffrey is a ruthless bastard whose kingdom causes fear. You might not like the way Joffrey rules Westeros, but he feels like a leader. Tommen was never a leader. While it’s nice that he’s not such a pathetic person, he’s not fit to rule the kingdom because he’s too naive and sweet. Bran’s biggest problem is that he’s an emotionless man. Say what you think about Ned, Joffrey, Tommen, Cersei, and Daenerys, but what they all feel. Even Joffrey’s attitude towards Margaery Tyrell was okay, but Bran felt nothing. He will not be able to connect with the people and sympathize with ordinary people. Of course, as the Three-Eyed Raven, he won’t be tricked or deceived like several past rulers, nor will he be a brutal tyrant, but in general, understanding people is an important tool necessary to lead them. Plus, to be honest, Bran has been the weakest character for the past few seasons. Yes, he develops into the Three-Eyed Raven, but Bran is a passive character and everyone else does all the work for him. He went on a journey, but he rarely struggled with himself. Bran evolves into this emotionless being, which turns out to be more of a hindrance to his character.
This is where Sansa comes in. The woman lost her father, was forced to marry Joffrey and deal with his cruelty, and she was later implicated in another monster, Ramsay Bolton. Although these cycles seem like Sansa is repeating the same beat, she is slowly maturing and understanding the world around her. In some ways, Sansa is able to manipulate Joffrey. She gains the power to get rid of Bolton (with some help) and eventually becomes the Lady of Winterfell. Once she’s forced to leave, she lets in another sly and devious vixen, Petyr Baelish, into her life, but Sansa isn’t stupid. She is very observant and has grown into a confident and intelligent young woman. She played Petyr’s game, continued to learn more about politics, and became an effective leader in her own right. Most importantly, however, Sansa identifies with the people very much. She understands their needs and can make the right decision, even if it ends up being the wrong one. Sansa was supposed to be the ruler of Westeros as a reward for his difficult journey after Ned was beheaded. But more importantly, she understands what it takes to be a strong leader and has the perfect balance necessary to be an effective ruler of Westeros. Sansa learns to play the political game without the cruelty and power lust of Joffrey, Cersei, and Daenerys. Nor is she an emotional and manipulative fool like Tommen. Will Sansa be the perfect ruler? of course not. She must be wrong. But so did Bran. Without any emotional feelings, he immediately chooses what he thinks is right, rather than caring what others might say. In hindsight, this may end up haunting him, as his vision does not guarantee future moments. Neither character is going to be a perfect ruler, but Sansa just goes to hell to get into her place. Bran, not so much. The thing is done, Bran is the ruler of Westeros, but Sansa will always be the uncrowned queen of the city.
