Mazepin doesn’t get the fastest lap at the Belgian Grand Prix
Ma Zeping set the fastest lap shortly after the chaotic Belgian Grand Prix was finally called off.
The Russian clocked 3m:18.016s when the backpack was crawling behind the safety car.
Mazepin didn’t get a bonus for the fastest lap (half a point) because he didn’t finish in the top 10.
However, the former Formula 2 driver soon lost his honor.
No driver was awarded the fastest lap when the steward’s official classification released the confirmed results.
This means that no driver has officially claimed the fastest lap at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.

Why didn’t Mazepin get it?
Article 51.14 of the FIA Sport Regulations states as follows:
- “If a sprint qualifying or race cannot be resumed, the result will be calculated at the end of the penultimate lap before the lap signaled to suspend the sprint qualifying or race.”
After a three-hour delay caused by the weather, the field was drawn out for just two laps before the red flag was raised again.
As the race does not continue after that, the above rules mean that the official classification must take place at the end of the first lap completed behind the safety car.
Because the Belgian Grand Prix became a one-lap race – the shortest race in F1 history – it was decided not to award the fastest lap.
Some say that because the “race” doesn’t last at least two laps, no points should be awarded.
However, F1 confirms that the result will hold and points are awarded.
As a result, Ma Zeping lost the first fastest lap of his F1 career in a challenging debut season.
He had a best finish of 14th in Azerbaijan with 0 points.
Teammate Mick Schumacher struggled just as well at the underdeveloped Haas.
His best finish was 12th – just before the summer break, he finished 12th at the chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix.
