Wow, must be their first trip in the NFL in 20 years. Of course, it has happened many times, it is not called.

The moment you’re an NFL referee, you call trip penalties, but not helmet-to-helmet. These Packers/49ers officials are very…interesting…yes. Let’s go together.

Why is tripping illegal in the NFL?
After being called for a foul, many have questioned why tripping is illegal in the NFL.
If the goal is to lower QB, tripping seems like a logical and legitimate way to go.
However, as defined in the 2019 NFL Rule Book (Rule 3, Section 40): “Tripping is the obstruction of any opponent (including a runner) with a leg or foot.”
Article 12, paragraph 1, article 8 stipulates that tripping is prohibited.
The reason is likely to prevent injury, just as clotheslines and shoulder buckets under masks are illegal.
It could also result in serious injury to the person who committed the foul and his leg could be stepped on or broken.
Others have hypothesized that this might be to reward blocking skills, rather than tripping.
Regardless, this seems like an unpopular rule that many fans don’t even realize.
