The organization is one of the most popular teams in America and beloved by Pennsylvania — but why is the Steelers logo only on the side of the team’s helmet?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the seventh-oldest team in the NFL and the oldest in the AFC. Their storied history dates back to the 1930s and is tied with the Broncos and Dallas Cowboys for the second-most Super Bowl appearances in NFL history.
One quirk of the team, however, is that the Steelers logo only appears on one side of a player’s helmet. Here’s a brief history of the logo and how it came to be.
A Brief History of the Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers were founded by Art Rooney in 1933, although they were known as the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time. However, prior to the 1940 season, in honor of Pittsburgh’s steel industry, the team was renamed the Steelers—its nickname was Steel City. From that season, they were known as the Steelers.
They played at Three Rivers Stadium for years with little success throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. The Steelers made the playoffs for the first time in 1947 and didn’t win their first AFC Central Division title until 1972. They moved to Heinz Field two years ago and won their first championship in Super Bowl IX in 1974.
The 1970s brought unprecedented success to the team, winning 7 AFC Central Championships, 4 AFC Championships and 4 Super Bowls. The team struggled in the decades that followed, but reemerged in the 2000s, winning Super Bowls XL and XLIII. To this day, the team is still owned by the Rooney family, with most of the control handed over to Artrooney’s grandson Artrooney II.

Relevance of the Steelers Logo
The Steelers logo – known as the Steelmark – pays homage to the team’s city and its rich steelmaking history. However, it originally belonged to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), and the Steelers requested its use in 1962.
This los angeles times Describing the design as a circle surrounded by “three four-pointed geometric shapes called yellow, red and blue hypocycloids”. The yellow hypocycloid represents coal, red represents iron ore, and blue represents scrap.
In a petition filed with AISI in 1962, the Steelers also asked if the word “Steel” in the circle could be changed to “Steelers.” This is when the team started using the logo, although the “Steelers” section wasn’t added until 1963.

Why is the Steelers logo only on one side of the helmet?
Many fans questioned why the Steelers logo only appears on one side of their helmet, which is not common in the NFL. In 1962, the Steelers finished the season 9-5, a franchise record at the time, and in honor of the team’s first playoff game, the team changed from its usual gold helmet to an all-black helmet.
Dan Rooney, son of owner Art, asked Steelers equipment manager Jack Hart to place the logo on the right side of the new helmet to see if it stood out. However, Rooney didn’t specify whether the logo would be placed on either side, so Hart just placed it on the right.
“It’s a very simple story: it was an arbitrary decision by the facility manager,” said Joe Gordon, the team’s former communications director. via Los Angeles Times. “Dan Rooney asked him to put the decals on the helmet and he did, just the right side. Dan didn’t specify whether he wanted the sides or the side of the helmet. So once that was done, he would It hasn’t changed either.”
Due to their success with the new helmets, the team decided to keep them permanently. Interestingly, the group never considered adding a logo to the left side of the helmet. It stuck, and while some college teams followed their approach, like Michigan State, no other team in the NFL used just one logo.
