Albert Hoffmann was a Swiss chemist born on January 11, 1906 in Baden, Switzerland. He is best known as the discoverer of lysergic acid diethylamine, now commonly known as LSD or “acid”.
After graduating with a degree in chemistry from the University of Zurich, Hoffmann worked in the field. When LSD was discovered, Hoffman was working in the Pharmaceutical/Chemical division of Sandoz Laboratories, now a Novartis subsidiary.
Hoffman first synthesized LSD on November 16, 1938, but revisited it later in 1943, his first acid journey.

With his altered state, Hoffman asked his lab assistant to take him home. Since the discovery took place in the context of World War II, they were unable to drive home. Instead, Albert Hoffman and his assistants rode their bikes home.
Hoffman reflects on the return trip in his book: “Everything in my field of vision was shaking, twisting, as if seen in a curved mirror. I also had a feeling that I couldn’t move from the scene. However, my assistant told me later that we were going fast. “
The day to commemorate the discovery of LSD, or “acid,” is known as Bicycle Day, as Albert Hoffman rode his bike home.
