There are very few nicknames in Formula 1, but one of the most popular is Daniel Ricciardo – but why are Australians called “Honey Badgers”?
F1 Daniel Ricciardo
Born in Perth, Australia, Ricciardo made his F1 debut with the small HRT team at the 2011 British Grand Prix.
He then moved to Red Bull Junior team Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) before being promoted to the home team in 2014.
Ricciardo stayed there for five years before leaving for Renault at the end of 2018.
His two years with Enstone’s team didn’t work out when he joined McLaren’s Lando Norris in 2021.
Ricciardo has never missed a single F1 race in his career, having started 204 grands prix, including eight victories.
During his time in F1, Ricciardo built a reputation as a lighthearted and fun guy.
His nickname, Honey Badger, is just one example, but where did the nickname come from?
let’s see.

Why is Ricardo nicknamed the Honey Badger?
Ricciardo has long put a picture of a honey badger on his race helmet, saying he can relate to the animal.
Common in Africa and Asia, the honey badger is a thick-skinned, strong mammal.
It is known for its toughness and defensive instincts, and has been observed to attack prey larger than it.

Ricardo believed he had some of the same qualities as the Honey Badger, so he adopted the nickname.
“It should be the most fearless animal in the animal kingdom,” He told Red Bull in 2014.
“You see, he looks cute and cute, but once someone crosses his territory in a way he doesn’t like, he gets a little savage.
“He chases everything – tigers and pythons, he turns fast, but he’s a good guy.”

Honey Badger Features on Special Helmet
Ricciardo is wearing a special tribute helmet for Dale Earnhardt Sr. at the 2021 United States Grand Prix.
Earnhardt Sr. was Ricciardo’s idol growing up, as the NASCAR icon won seven cups.
Ricciardo used Earnhardt’s iconic #3 as his race number, and the helmet he designed for the United States Grand Prix was based on Earnhardt.
The helmet is black with “McLaren Service Plus” written on the side.
“Honey Badger” on the back.
It is the same “Goodwrench Service Plus” font that Earnhardt decorated before the Daytona 500 died in 2001.
Ricardo will also drive Earnhardt’s 1984 Chevrolet machine.
McLaren boss Zach Brown has promised Ricciardo that he can drive it when he gets on the podium with the team.
Ricciardo achieved this at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, winning McLaren’s first race since 2012.
The car he will be driving will be a Chevrolet sponsored by Earnhardt’s Wrangler.
In 1984, the Intimidator won two races at Talladega and Atlanta, finishing fourth in the standings.
