During the NFL’s Super Wild Card Weekend, fans wondered “Why do some football players wear ‘pumpkins’ during games?” Here’s what they actually are and how they can help players.
It’s the NFL’s super wild-card weekend, and the Raiders and Bengals first get to work in Cincinnati. After that, we have the Bills against the Patriots, which is expected to be a cold one.
The game will be held at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. — home of the Bills, near Buffalo — and it’s going to get pretty chilly.according to mobile networktemperatures are expected to drop to single digits.
As temperatures plummet, fans are asking why some footballers wear ‘pumpkins’ during games.
With the weather noticeably colder, many players in the NFL are wearing what looks like a “pumpkin.” However, they’re not fanny packs at all – they’re actually hand warmers. Not only do they warm the player’s hands, but they also dry them, making it easier to handle the ball without fumbling.
they are usually worn by quarterbacks
These hand warmers are typically worn by the person most likely to handle football (i.e. the quarterback). At this juncture of the season, the last thing a QB wants is to drop the ball in crunch time, and a hand warmer can provide better grip.
That’s how you’ll often see QBs put their hands in these “pumps” as often as possible between games.

However, they are not only worn by QBs
While hand warmers are primarily used by quarterbacks, wide receivers are known to use them from time to time. WR usually catches the ball at high speed and needs to be able to get the ball out of the air to get to the end zone.
This will be more difficult with cold or wet hands, so making sure they’re warm and dry will only help with performance. WR must always be ready for action and making sure their hands are in good shape to be ready to catch the ball is critical.
Of course, a hand warmer does represent an opportunity for an opponent to steal and use it to make a tackle, but if the umpires are right and spot it, they’ll award a penalty.
