Defending NASCAR champion Chase Elliott has lost his starting spot in Texas and is starting in the backcourt in a playoff race. Why was #9 sent to the rear?
Chasing Elliott starts from the rear in Texas
Just like before every NASCAR race, the car must pass pre-race technology on the track.
This is to ensure that the machines are compliant and no one is breaking the technical rules.
Cars in the playoffs sometimes fail in the first round of technical tests as crew leaders try to push the boundaries for maximum performance.
Teams are allowed one technical failure before the game.
Once any adjustments are made, they are invited to check again.
If the car fails a second time, the drivers will lose their starting positions and fall behind on the pace lap.
That’s what happened with Chase Elliott in Texas.
The defending champ #9 lost twice, which meant he fell behind.
Fortunately, he did not fail technically for a third time.
In this case, in addition to descending to the rear, the driver must also complete a pass through the pit lane during the race.

How will it affect Elliott?
Before the chassis and body failures, Elliott should have been sixth on the grid.
Hendrick Racer is the only playoff contender to technically fail twice.
There were other multiple failures on the technical front, which meant Elliott wasn’t going to hold back as much as he could.
The likes of Corey LaJoie and Chase Briscoe also failed.
Because they were supposed to take the greens behind Elliott, once they were penalized, they fell behind him.
2020 Champion Elliott will roll 30th on the 1.5-mile Intermediate Texas Oval.
The race will use a 550bhp package.
The green flag is scheduled to drop at 2:08 p.m. ET.
For the record, Kevin Harvick’s #4 passed the technique on the second attempt.
