Olympic gold medalist Gong Lijiao was recently asked a seriously offensive and inappropriate question by reporters. Thousands of people came out in support of Shot, condemning outdated and misogynistic issues directed at her.
Who is Gong Lijiao?
Gong Lijiao is a Chinese Olympic shot put player who just won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
The 32-year-old won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. A year later, she won the gold medal at the 2009 Guangzhou Asian Athletics Championships.
In 2016, Lijiao won a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has announced that former silver medalist Yevgeniya Kolodko has failed an anti-doping test.

Gong Lijiao wins gold at Tokyo Olympics
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Gong Yong won the women’s shot put gold medal, setting a personal best of 20.58 million.
Team USA’s Raven Saunders took silver (19.79m) while New Zealand’s Valerie Adams (19.62) took bronze.
After her performance won, Gong Say: “I’m really, really excited to win this gold medal.
“Not only did I win this gold medal, but I also achieved my personal best. I think all my hard work was worth it.”

Why would she be at the center of a media backlash?
Gong Lijiao caused an uproar online recently after she was asked inappropriate questions in an interview with Chinese state media reporters.

People condemn the interview and stand up for Lijiao
People were quick to criticize the inappropriate and offensive interviews.
The Chinese especially condemn these issues, especially since Lijiao is a modern and diverse representation of femininity and beauty standards.
“She’s an Olympic champion, isn’t that enough to stop you from growing up, not getting married and having kids?” someone Say on the social media platform Douban. “It’s 2021; health and confidence make you beautiful.”
“We should not only talk about women’s marriage and appearance, but also about their dreams and success,” another said on Weibo.

“When we talk about women, it’s not just about marriage or looks, it’s about dreams and achievements.”
