Azerbaijan Grand Prix: Which teammates crashed in Baku? Formula 1 returns to the city streets of Baku this weekend for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. When the sport landed on the Caspian Sea before, there was a lot of confusion on the streets.
Baku has hosted three F1 editions and the Azerbaijani capital first appeared on the calendar in 2017.The competition last year was due to coronavirus pandemicand rounds in Japan and Singapore.
The race is now back, with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen battling for the title. The latter is narrowly ahead after winning the Monaco Grand Prix last time around, while the former is more than a minute behind in seventh.
Verstappen has also been involved in Baku as one of the more controversial moments in F1. The Dutchman collided with his former team-mate Daniel Ricciardo in a crash that would end their two races in 2018.

Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen crash at Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Ricciardo and Verstappen’s crash was the talk of the 2018 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. In a long race that saw the pair battling for Red Bull supremacy lap after lap, they made contact multiple times.
But both of their races would end on lap 40 when Ricciardo slammed into the back of Verstappen on the first turn. The Australian tried to infiltrate the interior of his former team-mate, who started to cover the current McLaren driver.

Verstappen’s defensive moves were late, leaving Ricciardo with no time to react as they battled for fourth and fifth. It also removed downforce from Ricciardo’s front wing, ensuring he was locked and uncontrollable under braking.
This pair reprimanded by the FIA steward for the event, while team boss Christian Horner Blame the two drivers. Ricciardo later revealed after his 2019 move to Renault that the team’s handling of the crash was Factors in his decision to leave.

The contact left Ocon impaled and Perez fractured his wishbone, forcing him to retire. The red flag to clear the debris allowed Perez to re-enter the race, but eventually retire again.

Ricardo and Kvyat unexpectedly reunite in Baku
Daniil Kvyat played alongside Ricciardo in 2015, but Red Bull replaced him with Max Verstappen in early 2016. Three years later, he will be unexpectedly reunited with Ricciardo in Baku while playing for Toro Rosso.
On lap 31 of the 2019 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Ricciardo unfortunately saw his race over after hitting Kvyat. The Renault driver at the time tried to pass the Russian at turn three, but his brakes overtook and went deep into the runoff.

Ricciardo frantically tried to get back on track to score the final point, only to find a reversal. However, unaware that Kvyat also stopped behind him and crashed into Toro Rosso, forcing him to retire with floor damage.
