Which package to use for each NASCAR Cup playoff race
๐ฉ๐ค๐
The NASCAR Cup Series playoffs kick off this weekend in Darlington. But which package will be used for the Southern 500 and each playoff race?
NASCAR playoffs feature combos
The Gen6 NASCAR Cup car is on its final tour before retiring.
It will be replaced by an all-new NextGen car in 2022.
Until then, it will be used in the NASCAR playoffs to determine the 2021 Cup Series winner.
As will be the case throughout the season, the racing package used will vary from race to race.
The 550 bhp/high downforce kit is typically used on the mid-to-long oval.
The 550 kit was designed to keep the field close together to create a tighter race and wasn’t universally popular.

Many have criticized the racing offerings it offers – because it is difficult for drivers to overtake.
Its cousin, the 750 hp/low downforce version, is more popular and better suited for short track and road courses.
There is a third less used package: the restrictor plate.
Used to limit power on Daytona and Talladega highways.
In the wake of Ryan Newman’s near-fatal 2020 Daytona 500 crash, steps have been taken to slow cars down even more on the superhighway.
This includes removing air ducts to prevent tandem traction and smaller throttle body size.
Which NASCAR playoff tracks will use which package?
The unpopular 550bhp kit will be used in three races throughout the 10-round playoff season.
It will make its Las Vegas debut in Game 1 of the second stage of the playoffs — dubbed the “Top 12.”
Then the bag will not be used again until “8 rounds” appears twice.
Texas and Kansas will run 550 packs back-to-back in the playoff semifinals.
In 2020, Penske’s Joey Logano successfully stopped Kevin Harvick’s offense in Kansas.
The win booked Logano’s place in the championship-decision game.
Harvick later said he simply couldn’t overtake his Ford Mustang driver because of the package.
750 packs to dominate the playoffs
Much of the 2021 playoff schedule consists of various short circuits and a road course.
For the first ’round of 16′, all three races will use the 750bhp package.
Darlington is a 1.3-mile track somewhere in the middle of a short track and a middle oval.
NASCAR bosses chose to make it 750 races after consulting with teams and drivers.
After Darlington, a night match between Richmond and Bristol completes the first leg of the playoffs.
For Round 2 – “Top 12” and Round 3 – “Top 8”, Package 750 is only used once per person.
During these two rounds, it will only be used by the car in the last race of the stage.
For “Round of 12” this would be “Roval” at Charlotte Road Course, and “Round of 8” at Martinsville.
The championship itself will take place in Phoenix — a one-mile track.
That means it will use a 750bhp package.
The only other game in the playoffs is Talladega.
It fell in the middle of the second round. As mentioned above, it will use the superspeedway specific package.

Darlington โ 750bhp (high power/low downforce)
Richmond โ 750 hp
Bristol โ 750bhp
Las Vegas โ 550bhp (low power/high downforce)
