Closest to F1 Championship results revealed
2021 marks the 72nd season of the F1 World Championship, and in that time the two drivers have never been at the top of the season-ending standings.
A series of titles were decided by one point, but in 1984 this title was decided by even less than that!
McLaren duo Niki Lauda and Alain Prost dominated the season on their machines, picking up 11 of 15 victories in the final in Estoril, Portugal.

Lauda leads with 66 points and Prost with 62.5, but if the Frenchman wins, he can claim his maiden world title, with Lauda finishing third or lower.
Veteran Lauda could only finish 11th, with Prost on pole.
Prost took the lead and Lauda methodically passed the field to finish third with 18 laps behind Prost and Nigel Mansell.
Mansell had a braking problem and went wide on lap 52, giving Lauda the crucial second place he needed to win the title.
In the end, Lauda scored 72 points and Prost scored 71.5 points, which was the points system at the time.
With half a point at the Monaco Grand Prix, Prost has only lost in the closest F1 championship ever.
It was the famous race where Ayrton Senna chased him in a rear marker car and Prost desperately wanted to stop the race, it was just before half distance.
In a nod to F1’s past, present and future, Senna finished third behind Prost and Lauda in the race – one of only two podiums the three multiple champions have ever shared .
This is Lauda’s third world title, making him the only driver to date to win for Ferrari and McLaren.

One point determines multiple champions
Over the course of the season, five F1 titles were decided by just one point.
- 1976 – James Hunt (69) v Niki Lauda (68)
- 1981 – Nelson Piquet (50) v (Carlos Rotman (49)
- 1994 – Michael Schumacher (92) v Damon Hill (91)
- 2007 – Kimi Raikkonen (110) vs Lewis Hamilton (109) vs Fernando Alonso (109)
- 2008 – Lewis Hamilton (98) v Felipe Massa (97)
The 2008 story is all too familiar as Hamilton snatched Massa’s maiden crown from Massa’s home circuit on the last corner of the final lap of the final race.
But in Sao Paulo a year ago, the Briton lost what could have been a stunning victory in his rookie F1 season.
Hamilton leads the champions into the final in Brazil with 107 points, team-mate Fernando Alonso with 103 and Kimi Raikkonen with 100.
That was the day to win 10 points.
McLaren’s Hamilton could have sealed the title in China in the previous race.
But he was dragged for too long by a worn middle tire and was stranded in the gravel on the pitstop.

This comes amid a sour relationship between McLaren and Alonso.
Instead of focusing on Hamilton, the team focused on trying to stop its drivers from winning the championship.
At the start in Brazil, Hamilton was sidelined by Alonso.
He’s still capable of winning titles – until the gearbox fails.
For 30 seconds, the McLaren was in neutral as the “box” cleared itself. Hamilton fell in the rankings.
Ferrari waved Massa through Raikkonen in the pit stop loop to win the race with 10 points.
Hamilton recovered to lap seven and two points. This is not enough.
F1 has never had, and never had, three drivers separated by just one point in the final standings.

Hunter steals Lauda’s crown in Japan
Arguably, 1976 was the most important season in F1 history.
The title fight between James Hunt and Lauda helped propel the sport into the mainstream.
Lauda dominated the early part of the season with four wins, two seconds and a third in his first eight matches.
He led Hunter 55-17 at the halfway point.
The German Grand Prix would change everything.
Lauda crashed on lap 2 of the Nurburgring, but somehow survived the fire and burns he suffered.
Hunter took advantage of Lauda’s absence and then lacked pace after his return to finish before the final in Japan.
This game should not be played in heavy rain.
Lauda is known to quit early as Hunt continues to work.
He survived a late puncture to finish third and with the four points he needs to claim the world title.
