What happened to former NBA star Greg Oden and where is he now?
👩🎤👗
Greg Oden is one of the most hyped players entering the NBA in decades. However, his career has never lived up to lofty expectations. But what happened to Greg Oden and where is he now in 2022?
After leading Lawrence North to three straight state championships from 2004 to 2006, Auden made a splash in high school. During that time, he was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year.
The 7-footer will go on to play with Mike Conley for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Together they reached the 2007 National Championship, losing to the Florida Gators.
Oden completed his tenure as the Buckeyes when he was named to the 2007 First Team All-Big Ten. He also went on to win the Pete Newell Big Shot Award and was a consensus second-team All-American.
Exploration of the NBA career of the former No. 1 rookie
Oden was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. He was drafted ahead of Kevin Durant, and he has huge expectations coming into the league on his shoulders.
However, three months after being drafted, Oden underwent the first surgery of his NBA career — a microfracture of his right knee. He missed the entire season, making his NBA debut only in the 2008-2009 season against the Los Angeles Lakers. He left the game with a foot injury after just 13 minutes of scoreless play.
In December 2009, Oden injured his left knee and will undergo surgery to fracture his left patella. He missed the rest of his sophomore season as injuries continued to plague him.
Oden continued to have knee problems for the next few years, and to correct his persistent problems, he underwent several microfracture surgeries. By then, Portland had seen enough and decided to part ways with him in 2012. Greg will be out for the rest of the season, but returned the following year after signing a one-year deal with the Miami Heat.
The 2013-2014 season was arguably the best of his career. Oden and LeBron James’ Heat team made it to the NBA Finals. They lost to the San Antonio Spurs in five games.

What Happened to Greg Oden After Miami?
After playing with the Heat, multiple teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, have shown interest in Oden’s services. That move never materialized, however, and Oden decided to play overseas in 2015, signing a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Jiangsu Dragons of the Chinese Basketball Association. He averaged 13.0 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game when he left China in 2016.
In 2018, Oden competed in the 2018 Basketball Championship, a $2 million summer tournament, as part of the Scarlet and Gray teams. In 2019, he was selected by the Aliens with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 BIG3 draft, but that’s where his game day ended in the end.
Injuries limited Oden to only 105 professional games in seven seasons in the NBA. There’s no denying that he had an undeniably mediocre career with 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Blazers and Miami Heat.
