What happened to Chase Elliott in Phoenix at the NASCAR season finale?
Chase Elliott is fighting back-to-backs and winning his second NASCAR Cup in Phoenix, but what happened to him in the end? Where does #9 end when Kyle Larson swept the crown?
Elliott got off to a solid start to the weekend in Phoenix, putting No. 9 Hendrick Camaro in the front row alongside Larson.
With stage points not counted towards the Championship 4 driver in the final, all Elliott needs to do is keep his 2020 title ahead of the three other contenders.
With 30 laps left in the race, 30 laps late as Championship 4 of Larson, Martin Truex Jr, Danny Hamlin and Elliott finished in the top four.
But what happened to Elliott as the season drew to a close in Phoenix?

On the final restart, Larson ran well and drove into the distance.
Meanwhile, Elliott quickly passed Hamlin with a nice move on the No. 11 Gibbs machine to finish third behind Truex.
However, despite his relatively short run early in the race, Elliott struggled to keep up with the leading duo.

In fact, Hamlin even slipped late as Elliott was out of the title race and his No. 9 Chevrolet was difficult to drive.
Things also took a turn for the worse for Georgia native Elliott, who was passed by Ryan Blaney in fourth — Elliott was powerless to stop what happened to him.
In the end, he finished fifth in the race and fourth in the standings with 5,032.
What did he say after the Phoenix result?
Larson’s 10th win of the season completes an all-out 2021 defeat against Elliott.
The defending champs have only had two victories — neither of which was an oval.
His victory at COTA was cut short by rain, and a second victory on American road.

He showed good pace early on and led 94 laps, but was powerless to stop what happened after the race started to veer away from him.
“I think our team has done a really good job of preparation this week,” he explained on the pit lane.
“I’m really proud of our team, we brought a really good car and did a lot of what we want it to do today/
It just didn’t work out, and the order of everything must be unfortunate for us [in terms of caution periods].
“I am proud of our team, [there’s] Lots to do, congratulations to Kyle and Cliff too.
What an amazing season. Very, very well deserved champion, great to see Kyle succeed.
Success is guaranteed when you are a good driver and a good person, surrounded by good people.
“It’s great to see that. But we’ll be stronger next year and try to give them a try.”
