On their jerseys, the Chicago Bears have the initials “GSH” on the shoulder pads, what does it stand for and who do they pay tribute to?
So far, 2021 has been an up-and-down season for the Chicago Bears with a mixed record.
They are 4-7 after 11 games and have won just one of their past six games — a 16-14 victory over the Detroit Lions on Thursday (Nov. 25).
Despite their uneven form, one thing has remained constant – their jerseys have “GSH” on them. But why does the Chicago Bears have GSH on their jerseys? What’s the meaning?

Chicago Bears “GSH” Explained
The three letters printed on Chicago Bears jerseys are a tribute to team icon George S. Harrahs. GSH on the Chicago Bears jersey stands for Harrah’s initials.
Born in Chicago in 1895, Halas was a central pillar of the Bears until his death in 1983 at the age of 88.
Think of a position at a football club, Harrah’s probably did it in the early days of the Bears.

He’s not just the owner, but the coach, the players and the guy who takes care of the business side.
One pointer to his business acumen was moving the Staleys (the Bears were called at the time) to Chicago from Decatur to cash in on ticket receipts.
He retired in 1929 but served as coach for four periods, 36 years from 1920 to 1967.

The Chicago Bears also chose to retire Harrah’s No. 7 jersey in honor of the man who put the team on the map.
Halas is more than just the NFL
Harrah’s plays the finisher in football, and baseball bats come in handy.
Before joining Staleys/Bears, he played for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball.
As an outfielder, he played only briefly for the Yankees in the summer of 1919. He made 12 appearances with 22 appearances.
Harrahs didn’t hit any home runs, just two hits, and his batting average was .091.
