During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, Fernando Alonso discovered the meaning of the word “El Plan” in the rear of his Alpine race car.
Ahead of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, Fernando Alonso and the Alpine team decided to have some fun with their cars.
Alonso’s car was spotted ahead of the first practice session on Friday 10 December with “El Plan” emblazoned on the back. A photo of the car started circulating on social media, and many responded with laughter.

Alonso has given cryptic details
Alonso has been referring to El Plan for a while, even sticking it on T-shirts and hats. El Plan appeared to have entered the collective consciousness of F1 during this year’s Turkish Grand Prix.
in one of his post-match interview, The Spaniard was asked about qualifying for P5. Alonso spoke to the interviewer who asked what the plan was. The driver simply replied: “You’ll have to wait a few months to find out.”
“Yes, you need to trust El Plan now,” he added, before walking away casually.
In addition, a Spanish flag in the stands at the Turkish circuit read: “We believe in ‘THE PLAN’.” The team and drivers shared the image, sparking even more curiosity.

So what does El Plan really mean?
Alpine has had a great season in every way, most notably Esteban Ocon’s maiden Formula 1 win at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. The team is fifth in the 2021 constructors’ standings heading into the final race of the season, 29 points ahead of sixth-placed AlphaTauri.
It’s clear, however, that both Alpine and Alonso have their eyes on the 2022 season, and that’s where the meaning of El Plan becomes clearer.
In short, El Plan means all the preparation and work Fernando Alonso and Alpine are doing to create a successful car ahead of regulatory changes in 2022.

Alonso won the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice before returning to Renault (now the Alps), but is eager to return to F1. But the Spaniard knows it will take time to build a car that can compete with Mercedes and Red Bull. However, regulatory changes in 2022 will present opportunities that will allow Alonso and Alpine to implement a plan to be in a strong position next year.
By implementing the “El Plan” now, the team essentially hopes they can change the grid in 2022, as Brawn did in 2009, so that Alonso can become a three-time world champion.
That’s probably why Alonso said in his interview that “you’ll have to wait a few months to find out”, knowing that he has to be patient with his time. Still, if anyone can make the strict rules work, it’s Alonso, and 2022 is a real opportunity for Alpine to move from midfield to the grid.
Only time will tell if El Plan pays off…
