Was Dwayne Johnson drafted in the NFL? Ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, people are wondering about the wrestling legend’s football career. Here’s what you need to know.
Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest and best-known actors in the world.
The former WWF (now WWE) wrestler has appeared in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, including the Fast and the Furious and Jumanji movies. Overall, his films have grossed over $10.5 billion worldwide.
Before that, however, he was a budding college football player.

Dwayne Johnson’s football career
In the 1990s, Dwayne Johnson was a promising football prospect who received many offers from Tier 1 colleges for college programs.
He eventually became a freshman defensive lineman for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami.
Despite being 6-foot-5 and 290 pounds, he spent most of his four years with the team on the bench.
“As a football player, on a scale of 1 to 10, Dewey (Johnson’s nickname) is a 6,” said former Miami teammate and Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp.
Johnson did have some bright spots in college, though, including his firing of Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward (in the Ballet introduce).

Dwayne Johnson’s Miami stats
During his time with the Hurricanes, Dwayne Johnson amassed 77 tackles and 4.25 sacks in 39 starts and appearances.
In 1991, as a freshman on Dennis Erickson’s team, he was part of a 12-0 national championship team that defeated Nebraska 22-0 in the Orange Bowl.
Although a member of the 1991 national championship team, he found his minutes limited by injuries and the presence of Tharp.
Was Dwayne Johnson drafted in the NFL?
No, Dwayne Johnson was never drafted in the NFL.
After finishing his senior season in Miami, Johnson fell short of the NFL in 1994.
After graduating with a BA in Criminology and Physiology in 1995, he signed with the Calgary Cowboys of the Canadian Football League (CFL) as a linebacker.
Johnson battled injuries before being waived by the Cowboys two months into the 1995 season.

During the question and answer session for ESPN a few years agoJohnson credits former teammate Warren Sapp as the reason he didn’t get into the NFL and chose to focus his attention elsewhere.
“I didn’t get into the NFL because of one person,” Johnson said.
“That’s Warren Sapp. Put your hands down. I’m here for a reason, and it’s by the grace of God, because you’re the best at what you do.”
