After the 2022 Australian Open semifinal between Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, fans are wondering why so many tennis players live in Monaco and Monte Carlo.
The glitz and glamour of Monte Carlo has attracted the rich and famous for decades. During the recent 2022 Australian Open semifinals, fans wondered why tennis players in particular chose to live in Monaco.
Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas both live in Monte Carlo. There are many other well-known players living there. There are several reasons for this.
First, the obvious…
A big reason why so many tennis players live in Monaco is that it is so beautiful! The Principality has been a millionaire’s paradise for decades. Monaco is surrounded by expensive shops, charming casinos, stunning harbours and breathtaking natural beauty.
Not only is the weather amazing (Monte Carlo has over 300 sunny days a year!), Monaco is also located on the Mediterranean Sea, which means it has easy access to Spain, France, Italy and many other places. The small but imposing principality is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Europe – who wouldn’t want to live there? !
Living in Monaco offers huge financial incentives
Not only is Monaco beautiful, it also has huge financial advantages.
according to my tennis headquarters: “Tennis players live in Monte Carlo because it is considered a tax haven. The Principality of Monaco does not levy personal income tax, nor does it levy a net wealth tax. The highest-ranked players in the world can earn millions in bonuses and sponsorship deals each year, so choosing to live in a tax haven is a lucrative decision. “
However, as they point out, the taxation of professional tennis is quite unique. Because players compete and earn money in tournaments around the world, they are subject to the tax laws of many different countries. Players can be taxed where they earn money and in their home country (if they live there). Therefore, living in a place like Monaco allows players to avoid a double whammy of taxes, which means it’s a very desirable place to live.

Daniel Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently met in the Australian Open semifinals, also live there. Although born and raised in Greece, Tsitsipas and his parents moved to Monte Carlo in 2019.
“Breaking news. My family moved to the south of France and we now live in the south of France. I don’t think we’re going back to Greece anytime soon. Maybe just for vacation,” Greek tennis player SayHe now lives in Monte Carlo, just a 45-minute drive from the Patrick Muratoglou Academy in Sophia Antipolis in southern France where he trains.
Medvedev, who advanced to the 2022 Australian Open final, has also moved to Monaco from his native Russia. “I think it would be much better to live in Europe or America than in Russia”, Medvedev Say.
