Bisbee’s Fishing Tournament: A History
Bisbee Sports Fishing is headquartered in the Blue Wonder, founded in 1975 by Robert (Bob) Bisbee. At the time, it was a humble tackle shop.
That same year, Bob Bisbee leased the Shell Fuel Terminal on Balboa Island, California, which he later renamed the Union 76 facility as Bisbee Marine Fuel Company.
Bob Bisbee became more involved with the local fishing community and turned his attention to the small fishing village of Cabo San Lucas. His interest in Cabo came from meeting with Louis Coppola, owner of the Cabo Finistra Hotel, and Coppola’s nephew and hotel manager, Bill Baft.
Baffert, Bisbee, and John Doughty (owner of JD.com’s Big Game Tackle Store and Bisbee employee at the time) came up with the idea for a marlin fishing tournament. This is when Bisbee’s Black And Blue was born.
The game is considered to have started in 1980.
