Fernando Alonso left the series in 2018 after declaring that he was no longer excited about the challenges that Formula 1 presented. However, he was soon attracted to the Alpine team. But what is the origin of French clothing and does he already have a history and team?
Renault exits after rebranding
Alonso charged for Lewis Hamilton at the Hungarian Grand Prix and finished fourth after a stunning defensive work done late in the race.
This comes after Sebastian Vettel was removed from second. However, Alonso pulled Hamilton just enough to protect his race-leading teammate Esteban Ocon.
Alonso then greeted Frenchman Ocon after the race to celebrate their Alpine team’s first F1 victory in its inaugural season.

Last season, Ocon competed in the outfit as Renault alongside Daniel Ricciardo. This was before the winter name change was considered to be in order.
To promote its sports car division, Groupe Renault decided to introduce the Alpine name to F1. It has previously competed in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The third time is Alonso’s charm
After two years away from F1, Alonso, who won the WEC and the 24 Hours of Le Mans on a ‘vacation’, has agreed to return to single-seater racing.
This is the third time the Spaniard has represented the team in Enstone, Oxfordshire.
It was when the team was previously branded as Renault that Alonso established himself as an F1 legend.
In 2005 he ended Michael Schumacher’s five-year domination of the series before retaining his driver’s crown in 2006.
He ended his first trip to McLaren in 2007 and paired with rookie Hamilton, which proved disastrous.

In 2008, he returned to Renault with minor scars and humiliation, where he worked for two years. He won the controversial 2008 Singapore Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix.
In total, 17 of his 32 Grand Prix victories came from the entity he now races for. Hungary was his best finish in F1 since fourth in Singapore in 2014.
How long will Alonso play for Alpine?
Running around in the back in an uncompetitive McLaren-Honda led Alonso to believe there were bigger and better challenges in wider motorsport.
He tried to win the “triple crown” of racing – the Monaco Grand Prix, Le Mans and the Indianapolis 500 – but failed to tick the last box on three attempts.
In 2019, he spectacularly and embarrassingly failed to qualify for the 2019 Indy 500.
Qualifying was eliminated by Xiaoyu at the last minute, and the performance ended a chaotic week on the track.
After Ricciardo decided to move to McLaren in 2021, Renault was lured back to F1 in an attempt to win that elusive third world title.
It’s a convenient marriage as no other team can, or should, take Alonso to 21 years and Renault need a star name to make up for the poor PR of losing Ricciardo.
Alonso is convinced that the new rules in 2022 give him the best chance of competing for victory and a podium once again.
After 11 games into the 2021 season, he is 11th in the standings with 38 points and has the longest scoring streak in the field with six.
