Some Lesser Known Facts About Sindhutai Sapkal
- Sindhutai Sapkal is an Indian social worker and social entrepreneur who has raised thousands of orphans by establishing numerous NGOs. Some of her children have become doctors, engineers and lawyers.
- For her contributions to social work, she has received more than 270 national and international awards, including the Nari Shakti Award awarded to her by President Ram Nath Kovind of India in 2017. She used the bonus to buy land for orphans. As of 2012, Sindhutai Sapkal has bred about 1,442 orphans. She has a large family of 207 sons-in-law and 36 daughters-in-law.
- She was born into a poor family, her father was a cattle herder. She was forced to live in poverty and family responsibilities. At the age of 8, she completed Level 4 and married a man 20 years her senior. While she was studying, she wrote on baladi leaves because the family could not afford slate. Her father was keen to educate her, but her mother opposed her studies. So, her father sent her to school without her mother’s knowledge, and her mother thought she was going to herd the cattle.
- She then moved to the village of Nawargaon in Vardacellu, where her marriage did not last long. By then she was pregnant for the fourth time. At the age of 20, she was abandoned by her husband due to rumors of an extramarital affair in the village. Still, she opposes the exploitation of local women by the forestry department who collect cow dung.
- At that time, she saw countless orphans lying on the street. Feeling distressed for those children, she adopted nearly a dozen. It became her life’s mission. Then she begged more fervently to feed them.
- To remove the prejudice between biological and adopted children, she donated the children to the Shrimant Dagdu Sheth Halwai Trust in Pune (Maharashtra). Today, her daughter runs an orphanage herself.
- While she was in Chihaldara, a tiger conservation project was underway, leading to the evacuation of 84 tribal villages. Sindhutai decided to bring the helpless Adivasi villagers back to their land and started protesting.
- During that course, she met Chhedilal Gupta, then the Minister of Forests. He agreed that the villagers would not be displaced until the government provided them with alternative land. When Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi arrived to launch the tiger project, she told her that if a cow or a hen was killed by a wild animal, the forest department would pay compensation, so why not humans? She immediately ordered compensation. In an interview, she recalled her struggling days, saying,
“I have no one with me and everyone has abandoned me. I know the pain of being alone and unwelcome. I don’t want anyone to go through the same thing. Seeing some of my kids do so well in their lives , I am very proud and happy. One of my children made a documentary about my life.”
- In 1970, she established her first ashram in Chikaldara, Amravati. She then opened her first NGO, Savitribai Phule Girls Hostel, in Chikaldara. She also runs an orphanage, Sanmati Bal Niketan Sanstha, in the Hadapsar area of Pune. Apart from this, she has many other organisations in Maharashtra.
- When she was 70 years old, her husband approached her and said he was ready to accept her now. But Sindhutay says she’ll accept him too, but she’s still a child because she’s just a mother now. She will accept her as the eldest son!
- On November 24, 2021, she underwent surgery for a diaphragmatic hernia. She recovered well, but a few days later she developed a lung infection. After her death, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,
“Sindhutai Sapkal will be remembered for her noble service to society. Thanks to her efforts, many children could have a better quality of life. She also did a lot of work in marginalized communities. Pained for her death. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said,
“The news of Sindhutai’s passing is shocking. She provided motherly care to thousands of orphans. In her sudden passing, an inspiring personality has disappeared from the field of social work.” NCP President Sharad Pawar said: “The kind of social work that Sindhutai does will inspire future generations.” Former CM Ashok Chavan said: “Sindhutai herself faced a difficult life, but she persevered in her efforts to improve the lives of orphans and abandoned children. Her Life is an inspiration for millions of people.”
Union Minister Smriti Irani called Sindhutai Sapkal “a beacon of hope and humanity”.
- On October 30, 2010, a Marathi-language film called “Mee Sindhutai Sapkal”, based on the life of Sidhutai Sapkal, was released. In the film, Tejaswini Pandit plays Sindhutai Sapkal.After her death, actor Tejaswini Pandit says
“I am trying to accept her death…she is sabki maye…a farishta (angel)…”
The film was selected for the world premiere at the 54th London Film Festival. About her life, an Indian writer named DB Mahajan published an autobiography titled “Aamchi Mai” on January 1, 2015.
