Norsman looks like a Vikings movie and it’s awesome

If you like Vikings and Norse folktales, you need to check out the new trailer for the upcoming epic historical thriller The Northman. It’s exactly what it sounds like, and trust you and me, it’s pretty awesome. Of course it’s just a teaser and those may be deceiving, but I don’t think this is the case. The premise is something you may have heard before. This is a revenge thriller about a Viking prince who seeks revenge on the man who killed his father. I know, we’ve seen about a million revenge movies like this, but this time, the main characters seeking revenge are the Vikings. How could we possibly say no to a revenge movie involving the Vikings? When I watched the trailer, it reminded me a lot of the Vikings series, just more edgy. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that The Northman is directed by Robert Eggers. This person’s resume is short but impressive. So far, he directed 2015’s The Witch and 2019’s The Lighthouse. These films can basically be summed up as psychological horror films with some very edgy story elements. On top of that, they have some very special talents. In fact, Anya Taylor-Joy from The Witch and Willem Dafoe from The Lighthouse will appear in The Northerners and The Boys, and they look amazing. I mean, when was Willem Dafoe not extraordinary?
Norsman is actually piled high with some star actors. The protagonist is the very tall, very Scandinavian-looking Alexander Skarsgard, who will play the role of Amleth. Fun fact: Amleth is actually a character considered to be a medieval Icelandic legend, and was the direct inspiration for William Shakespeare’s Prince Hamlet character. Even the names themselves are just rearranged letters. Smart move, Mr. Shakespeare. But since the Amleth character is Scandinavian of Icelandic descent, The Northerners is set in 10th century Iceland. Alexander Skarsgard plays the lead, Anya Taylor-Joy as Olga and Willem Dafoe as Heimer the Fool. I’m getting a lot of Skyrim vibes now. Oh, but that’s not all. Nicole Kidman will play Queen Goodrun, Amlaise’s mother. Amleth’s father, King Aurvandill, will be played by Ethan Hawke. You’ll see a little spoiler in the trailer, but Ethan Hawke won’t last long. Hey, that’s how revenge quests usually work. But I must say, his Nordic accent is very good. Reminds me why Ethan Hawke is always underrated.
How could we possibly ignore other actors? You get a protagonist like Alexander Skarsgard, a man with the perfect Nordic appearance, playing a vengeful Viking prince who sells it. Anya Taylor-Joy plays his sidekick, and from the way she speaks, her character sounds like she’s taking witchcraft seriously. In fact, in her own words, “she used her cunning to break men’s minds”. There’s something seriously deceitful about a character like this that I want to see. As for Mr. Willem Dafoe, he’s about five seconds into the opening of the trailer, but his character is really scary. When this man can bring Willem Dafoe’s temperament to absolute pinnacle, it means we’re in for a great show. The main villain, Fjölnir, will be played by Danish native Claes Bang. He is best known for playing Count Dracula in the Dracula Netflix series. How could northerners be better? I don’t know, but what I do know is that this cast and the fact that this is a story about Vikings has captured my curiosity. It’s like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and the Vikings TV series combined into one movie. I think it’s time to make a good Viking movie.
If The Northman sounds a bit cliché to you, just watch the full trailer and I think you’ll be hooked. We get the revenge story we’ve seen many times in the movie, but given that it’s primarily a Viking action movie, you can expect some bloody action. Do you want an example? There’s a segment in the trailer where Alexander Skarsgard’s character grabs a spear and throws it at his companion, before throwing it straight back at the person who threw it. Please, where have you seen something like this? But of course, such things only apply to Viking movies. As far as The Northman’s story goes, I think it’s a good opportunity to show us a different angle on Scandinavian history. According to old Icelandic poetry legends, Amleth came from jute. The Jutes were a Germanic tribe of Norse descent that joined the Angles and Saxons when the Germans invaded England in the 5th century after Roman occupation. The Saxons settled in the British territories of Essex, Sussex and Wessex. The Angles, on the other hand, settled in East Anglia, Northumbria and Mercia. As for jute, they chose to settle in Kent and the Isle of Wight. These three groups constituted the most powerful of the Germanic tribes.
Now, northerners happen centuries after the Anglo-Saxons settled in England. Based on the trailer, we see the people of Amleth live in a fairly small settlement. They still collected enough for a king to rule them, and not many kingdoms to expand. But hey, these are the Vikings we’re talking about. They are not particularly interested in expansion. But the trailer shows us a lot of tribes willing to go to war with each other. This is presumably the source of the main antagonist, Fjölnir, who was willing to kill the king and usurp the throne. All of this makes up the revenge story of the Northerners himself. This sounds like a cool revenge story featuring a Viking. Again, if you haven’t seen the trailer, I urge you to. Norsman is slated for release on April 22 next year. If you like Vikings, this movie might be for you.
