Meet Jenson Brooksby’s coach, the man behind this rising tennis star

The American tennis prodigy only turned pro this year, but has already established himself on the ATP Tour with a few notable scalps. We learn more about the talented tennis star, including coach of Jenson Brooksby.
The 20-year-old started the season with a win in South Africa on the ATP Challenger Tour. He defeated veteran Teymuraz Gabashvili in three sets to win the Potchefstroom Championship.
That victory lifted his world ranking from 315th to 254th.

He then made another appearance in the ATP Challenger final, but this time he lost in straight sets to compatriot Bjorn Fratangelo in Cleveland.
He didn’t lose a set on his way to winning the Orlando Challenger in April. Victory at home puts Brooksby in the top 200.
He won back-to-back Challenger events in his home country and avenged his loss to Flatangelo by beating his Cleveland nemesis at the Tallahassee Championship.
Grand Slam appearances
After qualifying, Brooksby lost in the first round of the French Open to Aslan Karatsev in the Australian Open semifinals.
He reached the ATP 250 final in Newport in July before losing on grass to former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Kevin Anderson.
With the U.S. Open series season in full swing, Brooksby beat Anderson in the first round at the ATP 500 in Washington, then swept Francis Tiafoe, Felix Tiafo and Felix in straight sets on the way to the semifinals Aug-Aliassim and John Millman.

But Brooksby has struggled in the last four matches against Italian star Jannik Sinner.
His performance in Washington put him in the top 100 in the world for the first time.
After winning a wild card in the U.S. Open main draw draw, Brookby beat Tyler Fritz and Kalashev to reach the round of 16 before meeting world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
The youngster went all-out against the 20-time Grand Slam champion, but Djokovic was too much for the NextGen star.
American Youth
His fourth-round appearance at Flushing Meadows meant he became the youngest American to reach the stage in New York since Andy Roddick was 20 in 2002 (ATP Tour).
The American beat Olympic champion Alexander Zverev at last week’s Indian Wells Masters, but the former U.S. Open finalist made the cut in three sets.
Brookby, who reached a career-high 70th in the world, made it to the quarter-finals of the Antwerp ATP 250 after beating fifth seed Riley Opelka in the first round after qualifying.

His stellar performance in Belgium will boost his chances of qualifying for the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan next month.
In that game, the eight players under the age of 21 who have scored the most points this season will play for the season.
Brooksby is currently fifth in Milan and could be linked with Sinner, Auger-Aliassim, Carlos Alcalás, Sebastian Korda, Lorenzo Musetti , Brandon Nakajima and possible Holger Vitus Nozkov Rune to compete.
Despite missing out on 2020 with a toe injury, the tennis world has gotten a taste of the big kill after Brooksby ended the career of former world No. 4 Thomas Berdych in the opening round of the Big Apple. .
Berdych scalped Brooksby’s first Tour title after qualifying for his first major.

Who is Jenson Brooksby’s coach?
Brooksby and his coach, Joseph Gilbert, have been working together since he was seven.
His parents, Glen and Tania, had taken Gilbert’s classes long before Brooksby. He used to teach only adults, but Brooksby’s parents asked if Gilbert would teach their son (Adenosine triphosphate).
The rest is history, as the pair have been together for 13 years.
Gilbert is the founder and owner of the JMG Tennis Academy (JMG). With over 20 years of coaching experience, he founded JMG in 2011 with a vision to develop players to the highest level.
After a stunning breakout year, Jenson Brooksby will be under the tutelage of Coach Gilbert with confidence that the pair can continue to reach new heights and lead NextGen’s charge into a new era of tennis.
