Ethan, aka CrankGameplays, aka the Unus half of the syndicated YouTube channel Unus Annus, tweeted a photo of him looking sadly at the coffin with the caption “Memento Mori” – a reference to the channel’s motto. Meanwhile, both he and Mark (aka Markiplier) are uploading Memento Mori videos to their respective YouTube channels. What do “Unus Annus” and “Memento Mori” mean?
Who or what is Unus Annus?
YouTube anchors Mark Fischbach and Ethan Nestor-Darling set up Unus Annus on November 13, 2019, as a way to offer viewers a different experience.
The goal is to make one video a day for a full year and then remove all traces of the video from the internet.Ultimately, they produced 369 videos over the next year, totaling Nearly 870 million views between them.
Over 1.5 million people watched the final livestream of Unus Annus, called Goodbye, and they deleted the channel.

“It takes a year of work to build a moment,” polygon To quote Fischbach. “That second, before we hit the delete button. The last second—that’s everything. And now it’s over.”
Why do they say ‘memento mori’?
The word “memento mori” literally means “remember you have to die”. It is an artistic or symbolic metaphor that reminds people of the inevitability of death.
As the motto of the Unus Annus YouTube channel, Memento Mori is a constant reminder to creators Mark and Ethan, as well as the channel’s viewers, that it will only last one year.
Ethan’s tweet encapsulates some of the nostalgia many viewers of the channel have for its content, and the experience of watching it, knowing that it will soon be removed.
