McLaren’s last F1 victory revisited
π©π€π
McLaren won its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in less than nine years with Daniel Ricciardo at the Italian Grand Prix. Here’s a look back at what happened the last time McLaren won in F1.
Major events leading up to the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix
The competition is the final of the 2012 season and there is a world champion to decide.
Defending world champion Sebastian Vettel leads the table with a 13-point lead over rival Fernando Alonso.
Both are vying for a third world title.
Alonso has been at the top of the table for most of the season, but Vettel’s stellar performance in the Asian Flying Race has put him at the top.

Vettel finished fourth at Red Bull – a better weekend than Ferrari.
Alonso was eighth but moved up to seventh after Pastor Maldonado was penalized.
Other news coverage of the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix
Elsewhere, it was Lewis Hamilton’s last race at McLaren.
The Briton, who switched to Mercedes in 2013, has lost faith in McLaren’s ability to deliver a car that can consistently challenge the title.
He held pole position for the 26th and final time as a McLaren driver, with teammate Jenson Button riding a shotgun in the front row.

The seven-time world champion retired 21 years after his debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix.
He finished 14th in the sub-par Mercedes team, which had a poor second half of the season.
Oh, just for a better measure, because the final match winner decider wasn’t nervous enough and it rained.
What happened in the beginning?
Vettel was drowned after a poor escape, with no help from teammate Mark Webber.
At Turn 4 on the first lap, Vettel was flagged by Bruno Senna and slipped.
Red Bull’s rear end was badly damaged, including the floor and radiator.

Meanwhile, Alonso was on the podium as Vettel started to move forward.
At Turn 1 on the second lap, he ran from the inside of Webber and his own teammate Felipe Massa to third behind Hamilton and Button.
However, after two tours, Alonso went wide in the Senna S, allowing Nico Hulkenberg to move into third.
Alonso will never be in a title-winning position again.
Safety car deployed for debris
With the rain getting heavier, most of the teams pitted for the middle tires, although Button and Hulkenberg didn’t race.
The German passed Button for the lead on lap 19, pulling away after various accidents until the shards of the safety car on lap 23.
At this stage, Alonso is fourth and Vettel is fifth, albeit badly injured.
At the restart, Hamilton caught up to Hulkenberg before he put a wheel on the white line at the edge of the track and half fought.

He regrouped and Hulkenberg collected the McLaren as Hamilton passed back traffic on lap 54.
Hamilton’s right front was destroyed as he took off. Hulkenberg hit the road again but was given a time penalty for the incident.
Final stage of Schumacher’s gift
Button continued to lead and Massa was mildly encouraged to give Alonso second place with 18 championship points.
However, this is not enough.
In the final laps, Schumacher, who ran sixth in the farewell race, slowed down to let Vettel pass.
He doesn’t need to do that because seventh is enough for Vettel if Alonso doesn’t win the race.

The race and season ended behind the safety car as Paul di Resta crashed in heavy rain and rain two laps before the end of the race.
Button won the title for McLaren, Alonso second and Massa third.
Vettel won his third world title by three points in sixth place and Schumacher scored the last time in seventh place.
Elsewhere, Caterham’s Vitaly Petrov was 11th, enough to move the team past Marussia in the constructors’ championship.
With neither side scoring, the best match result will decide the standings.
Petrov passed Caterham’s 2013 Marussia driver Charles Pique in the closing stages to move the former to 10th in the standings.
What happened to McLaren after Button’s 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix win?
Button’s 15th Grand Prix victory will be the last of his career.
It will also be McLaren’s final race 3,213 days before the 2021 Italian Grand Prix win.

During that time, the team fell behind the F1 grid.
It opted to develop an all-new car for 2013, but it backfired in the final year of V8 regulations and failed to make it to the podium.
The double podium at the first race of the turbo-hybrid era in 2014 was the pinnacle of McLaren.
Kevin Magnussen finished second in Melbourne, Australia, with Button third.
It will be McLaren’s last podium finish before the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, when Carlos Sainz Jr finished third.
The McLaren-Honda reunion proved disastrous because of Woking’s engineering discomfort.
The new structure, with Zak Brown as CEO, Andreas Seidl as team principal and James Key as technical director, has reinvigorated McLaren.
It agreed to Mercedes to supply the team with engines again from the 2021 season, with Ricciardo joining from Renault to work with Lando Norris.
The Italian Grand Prix was McLaren’s first single-double finish since the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix (Hamilton/Button).
The team is currently third in the standings with 215 points behind Ferrari.
