Joe Rogan and others theorize Simone Byers’ struggles in Tokyo
On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, podcast host Joe Rogan defends Simone Biles.
“A lot of people mocked her online and called her a coward,” Rogan said.
“That’s disgusting. You don’t know what’s going on in her head. Should she play when she kills herself? Should she play when she’s freaking out?”
He then mentioned Byers’ ADHD, suggesting that her inability to take normal prescription drugs in Japan might have affected her performance.
“Should she do gymnastics when she’s really lost her mind?” he added. “When people quit prescription drugs…I don’t know what it’s like to quit Ritalin. But I guess it’s not fun.”
The medical literature seems to support Rogan’s hypothesis.

Is Ritalin Illegal in Japan?
So why can’t Simone Biles take her normal ADHD medication for the Tokyo Olympics?
Well, Ritalin is banned in Japan.
According to the website of the Japanese Embassy in Denmark:
“It is against the law to carry such drugs. If you do, you will be arrested.
- ‘Example dexamphetamine (for ADHD, narcolepsy, etc…)
- Alternative: Ritalin, Concerto or Vyvanse. Ritalin and Concerto contain methylphenidate, which means they are classified as psychotropic drugs.
According to the nonprofit organization The Associated Kyoto Program, Inc. (AKP): “While Ritalin can be used in Japan to treat sleep disorders, it is not suitable for people with ADHD.”
also, Adderall, another standard medication used to treat ADHD symptoms, is also on the banned list.
This would certainly confirm the theory that Biles was unable to take her normal ADHD medication in Japan (although it is important to note that we cannot be sure if Biles was able to take her normal medication).
But if she doesn’t, as countless Medical Journal Statuswhich is likely to cause adverse reactions and severe withdrawal symptoms that may affect Biles’ ability to perform.
