The 2021 IndyCar Championship is up for grabs this weekend at the season finale at the iconic Long Beach street circuit.Three drivers still in contention for the title, but what about the IndyCar points system Work?
IndyCar points system difference to Formula 1
IndyCar, which is actually NASCAR, has a completely different points system than Formula 1.
Riders in both U.S. series will earn points wherever they finish, as long as they start.
Even if they drop out on the first lap, they’ll get a finisher position with points distributed on a sliding scale.
In F1, only the top 10 finishers earn points.
Any riders who do not finish will not be classified and the record will show a DNF next to their name.

IndyCar Points System Explained
The contest winner will get 50 points.
2nd place gets 40 points, 3rd place gets 35 points and 4th place gets 32 points.
It was followed by 10th with a score down to 20.
From 11th to 25th, the integral decreases by 1 for each position.
11th place will earn 19 points, down to 5 points if 25th.
5 points is the minimum score a driver can earn, which is awarded between 25 and 33 days.
Drivers who qualify for pole position also earn extra points, as does any driver who leads the race by at least one lap.
The other two points will be allocated to the rider who leads the most laps.
This means the highest score a driver can achieve in a race is 54 points, outside of the double-point Indy 500.
2021 IndyCar Title Lineup
The three drivers still up for grabs are:
- 1st place – Alex Palou – #10 Chip Ganassi Racing – 517 points
- 2nd – Pato Oward – #5 Arrow McLaren SP – 482 (-35)
- 3rd – Josef Newgarden – #2 Team Penske – 469 (-48)
No matter what Oward does, Palo will finish 11th in his second season in IndyCar.

If Palau scores at least five points, Oward will need the top two to claim the title.
Newgarden is a perimeter stake for a third IndyCar title.
#2 Penske must want Palou and O’Ward to drop out early, with a minimum of 5.
Newgarden must then win the game and receive all bonus points offered.
