Fox News’ Jesse Watters spoke with a moderator on Reddit’s r/antiwork forum yesterday (Wednesday, January 26, 2022), which means the anti-work movement has some mainstream presence now — but this one What does the movement stand for, and how does the subreddit embody it?
Fox News interview explores meaning of ‘anti-job’ after going viral
First thing: “Anti-work” refers to two things, a movement (or morality) and a specific subreddit.
The anti-work (or anti-work) movement dates back to at least 1881.That year, the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche wrote Dawn, in which he criticize “Praise the ‘work'”.
Among other things, he likens the concept of “impersonal activity for the public good” (i.e. work) to a kind of silent policeman: “It keeps everyone at bay and powerfully hinders the development of reason, greed, and desire. .independent”.

Other prominent figures who contributed to the anti-work movement included the British polymath Bertrand Russell, praise laziness; Roman Catholic priest and theologian Ivan Illich, who wrote the right to useful unemployment; and American anarchist Bob Black, his 1985 book abolish work Criticize work (among other things) for the simple fact that it takes the form of “work”.
Others later developed these ideas.
What exactly is subreddit /antiwork?
With its former slogan — “Everyone is unemployed, not just the rich!” — Reddit’s r/antiwork community forum is closely associated with the anti-work movement.

How has the meaning of “anti-work” changed over time?
Anti-work ethic has been around for a long time—more than 140 years, but maybe even longer.
For Nietzsche, work consumes “a great deal of neural energy” that is best spent “reflection, contemplation, dreaming, worrying, love and hate.”
Meanwhile, for Americans architect and futurist buckminster fuller, people’s “real career” should be “go back to school, think what they’re thinking, and then someone comes and tells them they have to make a living”. In other words, work represents a distraction from more important things.

Major newspapers and magazines published a large number of review articles (slate, Teen fashion, New York Times, protector, vice) expressed solidarity with members of the anti-work movement, which included erosion of workers’ rights, job burnout and lack of child and elderly care.
Its meaning may have changed, but the anti-job movement has re-entered the public imagination in recent years.
