Immortals Fenyx Rising Review – Spotlight
This is an honest review of Immortals Fenyx Rising. The Legend of Zelda Meets Assassin’s Creed Ubisoft Next-gen power show Immortals Fenyx Rising – but how does it fare?
While it’s available in all formats, Immortals Fenyx Rising is one of the most anticipated launch titles for next-gen consoles.
And for good reason.
The footage before the game’s launch is breathtaking. And, with the support of Ubisoft Quebec, there are high hopes.
Immortals Fenyx Rising Review
For those who might not have fun, Immortals is an action-adventure game from a third-person perspective.
As mentioned above, Ubisoft is undeniably influenced by the excellent, genre-leading Zelda Breath of the Wild (BOTW). This inspiration has a clear crossover with Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series.
When you get there, cross that bridge – and fast.
Players begin by customizing the gender, voice, and appearance of their titular character, Fenyx, using Aphrodite’s Beauty Chair. But what’s cool is that you can always come back and mix as much as you want.
Like Zelda and Assassin’s Creed, Immortal is set in a large open world consisting of seven regions. Each is inspired by the Greek gods.
A little bird named Phosphor accompanies you on your journey, which helps you identify locations of interest on the map – does that sound familiar to Assassin’s Creed fans?
Wings of Daedalus
You can quickly traverse the world by climbing cliffs, riding on a mount, and flying with Daedalus’ wings. The difference here is that the full open world is accessible right from the start of the game.
As you explore, you’ll come across a rift that transports you to the Tartarus Vault. These are a series of platforming challenges that require players to use Fenyx’s fighting and traversal abilities – sound familiar to Zelda fans?
Some gods will be with you, some will not.
In an open world game, you will encounter the usual side quests and optional puzzles. The action is jaw-droppingly beautiful. It’s undeniably the most enjoyable on the next-gen console.
Enemies you encounter along the way are inspired by Greek mythology, ranging from minotaurs to cyclops.
Attack method
You have two methods of melee attack – a light attack with the sword, which is fast but doesn’t do much damage – and a heavy attack with the hammer, which, you guessed it, is slower but deals more damage.
This is one in the eyes of a cyclops.
You can also use bows and arrows. However, the key to your success and survival is your management of stamina in the game – just like in BOTW.
Progression is fun and rewarding as you unlock powerful god-like abilities, such as Ares’ spear, which can catapult enemies into the air. Weapons and armor can also be upgraded through crafting items found while exploring.
nowhere to hide
One of the big problems with Fenyx Rising is that by borrowing heavily from two industry-leading games, it’s hidden in many ways.
However, it does a great job in many ways. The side quests and collectible elements are great and rewarding — and addicting.
Sanctuaries (think shrines, Zelda fans) are great puzzles in their own right. At the same time, the combat mechanics are set at such a level that they are easy to pick up and not too difficult to master.
The script works for elements of comedy that I don’t really like. I don’t think it fits well with the whole storyline.
Solving puzzles is part of the fun.
For those who like a tough challenge, there’s a saying that Immortals is a breeze, from conquering enemies to discovering secrets and completing quests.
If fighting in Zelda and Assassin’s Creed was a challenge, it wasn’t. Every time you level up and boost your special abilities, your enemies will be knocked back with ease.
Nintendo charm
All in all, though, Immortals Fenyx Rising offers an amazing world to explore — preferably on a new generation of consoles. It’s packed with the kind of glamour usually reserved for Nintendo games.
Mythical beasts, power, and satisfying combat, combined with a wealth of customization options, make the journey across the Golden Isles fascinating – if shorter and easier than expected.
While the tone of the comedy was not to my liking, some comments from Zeus, Prometheus, and the other gods were hilarious.
Some elements feel like a missed opportunity, and there’s not much originality to the game structure. But, as far as the initial effort goes, Immortals Fenyx Rising’s potential in a thriving franchise is there.
Works with all formats (Reviewed Version: PS5)
Rating: 7.5/10
