Tunisia and the Olympics: A History
Tunisia first participated in the Olympics in 1960, four years after their independence from France.
The North African country has participated in every Summer Olympics since Tunisia participated in the boycott in 1980. The boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics was led by the United States to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. That year the Soviet Union hosted the Summer Games. Four years later, when the Olympics were held in Los Angeles, they returned their favor and boycotted the Games with their Soviet allies.
Tunisia has never participated in the Winter Olympics.

With Ahmed Hafnavi’s recent victory in the men’s 400m freestyle, Tunisia now holds five Olympic gold medals.
