Glenn Hoddle has said he sympathizes with Matt Doherty after full back Tottenham Hotspur’s career starts to stutter Evening Standard.
Doherty endured another difficult afternoon during the north London derby loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
This isn’t the first time the Ireland international has donned a Spurs shirt since he signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £14.7m (guardian) in August.
Doherty was constantly under pressure from Arsenal’s dynamic left-sided duo of Emile Smith Rowe and Kieran Tierney, while also lacking the cover of his Tottenham teammates.
It was another disappointing day for Doherty, whose frustrating performances continued to build.
Hoddle highlights the problem
However, the 29-year-old has the backing of Hoddle, who believes Doherty’s woes stem from his role under Mourinho.
The former Tottenham manager explained: “We saw[Doherty]do really well at Wolves and when he goes to Tottenham I think they will be looking for a back three.
“Full-back is his position and I think Doherty is hard at the back four. I really think that’s the problem.”

Hoddle explained the location issue further.
He said: “It’s a slight adjustment from full-back to full-back. You have to be a little bit more on screens, you have to play a little bit deeper and you’re not as advanced.
“(Doherty) was always sneaking up behind Wolves and looking threatening.
“You can do that because you have three centre-backs. He’s more of a winger than a right-back.”
Doherty’s powers run out
At Wolves, Doherty had plenty of freedom to gallop down the right flank thanks to extra cover from the third centre-back.
Mourinho’s extreme caution eliminated the possibility of Doherty bombing forward.
However, the Tottenham boss is unlikely to change his style anytime soon. So it looks like Doherty will have to work hard on the training ground or leave in the summer.
