History of Romain Grosjean’s Andretti Autosport IndyCar Team
Romain Grosjean’s move to Andretti Autosport for the 2022 IndyCar season has been confirmed. The former Formula 1 driver will be driving the No. 28 car, but what is the history of the Andretti Racing Team he joined?
Romain Grosjean will race for Andretti at IndyCar
Grosjean starred in small Dale Coyne’s IndyCar in 2021 with the Rick Ware Racing #51 machine.
He left F1 at the end of 2020 and did not retire, opting instead to race IndyCar.
He has three podiums, including third at Laguna Seca on Sunday and pole at Indianapolis Road Course.
Grosjean’s consistent form has put him in contention for the IndyCar Rookie of the Year award despite not competing in some ovals earlier this year.
He scored 266 points, 20 behind Penske rookie Scott McLaughlin.
Grosjean will transfer full-time to the No. 28 DHL Andretti Autosport car in 2022.
If he qualifies, he will race the Indy 500.
He replaces 2012 champion Ryan Hunter-Rey in the squad and will be paired with Colton Hertha, Alexander Rossi and third-place partner currently held by James Hinchcliffe .
“It’s a great privilege to be part of such a great team as Andretti, and anyone in the racing world knows the name Andretti,” Grosjean said.
“I would also like to thank Dale Coyne Racing for giving me the opportunity to join IndyCar.
“I thoroughly enjoyed racing and today it gave me a change to race with one of the most competitive and best teams in the world.”
What is Andretti Autosport’s IndyCar history?
Andretti Autosport is run by Michael Andretti, son of former F1 driver and 1978 F1 champion Mario.
It first entered the CART (predecessor) of today’s IndyCar in 1994, racing solo for Jacques Villeneuve.
Villeneuve finished second in the 1994 Indy 500 and won the team’s first race in the US road race later that year.
A year later, the Canadian won the CART Championship and the Indy 500 — Andretti’s first success at both events.
After Villeneuve switched to Williams in F1 in 1996, the team went on to have odd victories but not enough championship titles.

Dario Franchitti was runner-up in 1999.
In the late 1990s, Andretti remained loyal to the CART open-wheel split.
However, in 2003, Michael Andretti brought the team to what is now IndyCar, working full-time.
IndyCar Champion and Indy 500 Success
In the team’s second season in IndyCar — 2004 — Tony Kanaan won the championship.
The affable Brazilian has signed to replace Paul Tracy – who opted to stay on the split CART side – and is now branded as Champ Car.
A year later, Kanan was runner-up behind British driver Dan Wilton in the standings.
Franchitti will clinch the 2007 title, while Hunter-Reay’s 2012 title is the team’s last so far.

Andretti’s exhausting years
Andretti hasn’t produced a title-winning season since Hunter Rey, despite his streak of victories in recent years.
Its best performance since 2012 was Rossi’s campaign in 2018 – where three victories were enough to be runner-up.
In 2021, it has two victories thanks to rising star Hertha.
Herta Jr, son of CART legend Bryan, wins in St. Petersburg and Laguna Seca.
In fact, Rossi was the last driver other than Herta to win a championship for Andretti Autosport – in 2019 at the US road race.
Back in 2017, Fernando Alonso made his Indy 500 debut with Andretti.
Tired of driving around in uncompetitive McLaren Hondas, Alonso was drawn to Indianapolis.

Where else will Andretti Autosport race?
In addition to the Indy Lights Championship – think Formula 2 – IndyCar’s F1, Andretti is also active in Formula E.
One of its drivers, Jake Dennis, was fighting for the title in the 2020/2021 season, but narrowly lost to eventual winner Nyck de Vries.
Teams using BMW powertrains have scored seven victories in the electric series.
Antonio Felix da Costa, Alexander Sims, Maximilian Gunther and Dennis won for the team.
