The Abu Dhabi Formula 1 circuit is unique in that it features a tunnel often used by cars, forming an exit from the pit lane. Has anyone ever crashed in a pit tunnel?
Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit has undergone some modifications ahead of the 2021 title showdown between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
The track is quicker as two corners have been removed to make passing easier and some corners reshaped to make following easier.
The chicane ahead of the back straight is over, as is the left/right/left bend at the end of the second DRS zone – now into a fast banked southpaw.
Despite all these changes, Abu Dhabi’s pit exit remains the same – featuring the tunnel under Turn 1.
This weekend is the 12th visit to Yas Marina, but has anyone crashed in the Abu Dhabi pit tunnel before the Grand Prix weekend.

Abu Dhabi pit tunnel crashes
F1 has been visiting Abu Dhabi for years, and as of December 10, 2021, not a single driver with a grand prix machinery has crashed in the Abu Dhabi pit tunnel.
If a driver collides in the pit lane, if the car cannot run on its own power, a red flag needs to be displayed during the race on the track while the car is removed.
Access to the tunnel was limited, so putting the marshal on the track meant the race had to be cancelled and the pit entrance closed.
Only one driver crashes
Only one driver has crashed in the pit tunnel in Abu Dhabi so far.
Here are the Formula 2 (then GP2) drivers in the 2015 season finale.
Sean Geleal, driving for Team Carlin, left the pit lane on lap 26 of Saturday’s 31-race meeting.
