Five cricket records that have stood the test of time – will anyone beat them?
Cricket matches are accompanied by a sea of records. We’ve seen games grow to the point of being able to compete in test matches, ODIs, and even more than ten exhibition matches. Hundreds of people haven’t come yet!
Many records cannot be broken due to changes in rules or formats. However, here is focus Let’s take a look at five breakable but very good records that are highly unlikely!
Jim Laker – Most wickets in Test
At Old Trafford in 1956, England deputy Jim Lake scored 19 wickets during the fourth Ashes Test. Just one perfect 20 wickets away.
Australia were reduced to a paltry 84 points in the first innings. The only wicket the Lakers failed to take was opener Jim Burke, who fell to Tony Locke.
In the first inning, the Lakers had nine wickets with 37 points. He was flawless in the follow-up, taking all 10 wickets 53 times from 51.2 overs.
Lakers brilliance leads England to victory by one inning and 170 points (protector). The Lakers’ final game stat was a staggering 19-90.

The closest bowler to the Lakers feat is 16 wickets in a game. In 1972, Australian pacer Bob Massie scored 16-136 against England at Rhodes Stadium (Cricinfo).
Indian leggie Narendra Hirwani came close to Massie’s feat in a 16-137 match against West Indies in Chennai in 1988 (Creek Information). The remarkable thing about these two feats is that both Massie and Hirwani made their test debuts!
In 1998, Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan performed at The Oval (Creek Information). After scoring seven for 155 in the first innings, Mulally scored nine of his team’s 10-wicket win with a staggering 65.
Another Sri Lankan, Rangana Herath, took 14 wickets against Pakistan in Colombo in 2014 (Creek Information). Yasir Shah achieved the same in DSC 2018 against New Zealand (Creek Information).
With only one wicket required from any other bowler on the team, the Lakers’ record looks likely to last a long time.
Sir Jack Hobbs – First Class Running and Century
Jack Hobbs was an iconic player who left his mark on top-notch cricket. Hobbs holds two records that are unlikely to be broken.
Playing 500 first-class games is a feat in itself, and Hobbs managed 834. No one has scored more than his 61,760 games or more than his 199 games. Yes, you read that right, only a century 200 (Creek Information).
Sir Donald Bradman – most runs in the test series
You might think “The Don” would be here because of his staggering Test match average (99.94). Well, it’s a bit predictable. We’re talking about the Australian legend’s highest record in a Test series.

In the five-game Ashes Test series in 1930, Bradman scored 974 runs in seven innings, averaging 139.14. This total includes four centuries, with a maximum score of 334 (Creek Information).
Lawrence Rowe’s Dream Debut
West Indies batsman Lawrence Rowe made the Test debut every young cricketer dreams of. Law made his debut against New Zealand in Kingston’s first Test in 1972. The then 22-year-old scored 214 points in the first inning and 100 in the second.
Despite his excellent performance, the game ended in a draw (Creek Information). Still, getting a double ton and a century on its debut is an incredible feat.
The player who came closest to Luo’s record was Pakistan batsman Yasser Hamid.
In his first Test against Bangladesh in Karachi in 2003, he scored 170 in the first inning and 105 in the second. Fortunately, Hamid won in his game and his team was victorious (Creek Information).
Rohit Sharma – ODI Double Century
India’s opener managed to score three double centuries in ODI cricket (Cricbuzz).
In 2013, during his seventh ODI on the Australian Tour, he scored 209 points against Australia in Bengaluru. The hosts won easily with 57 points (Creek Information).
A year later, in his fourth ODI in Sri Lanka touring India, Sharma had a 264 in Kolkata. Sharma’s heroics in the day and night game led India to a 153-point victory (Creek Information).
Finally, in the second ODI of the Sri Lanka tour of India in 2017, The Hitman scored 206 points against Sri Lanka without being out. The men in blue won again by a stunning margin – 141 points (Creek Information).
Getting a double ton in the ODI is hard enough. It may take some effort for someone to score four points to break Sharma’s record.
