Does Channing Tatum get a chance to play Gambit?
Anyone else remember when Channing Tatum was supposed to play Gambit? Maybe not, but it’s disappointing that it’s been working for a while. Heck, this guy even showed up at Comic-Con with all the major characters Fox had in the original X-Men universe. This ended shortly after the merger with Disney. In a recent interview with Variety, Channing Tatum revealed that the film was ready, but on the way to actually start shooting, they got a call. The Gambit movie isn’t going to happen, although the crew prepares to start filming in New Orleans. Needless to say, it’s disappointing, but it’s a far cry from how Channing Tatum felt after the Gambit movie was canceled. In his own words, he was actually traumatized from the whole experience, and so badly that he couldn’t even get himself to watch any Marvel movies. Wow, now these are some heavy words from the movie. In order for this guy to actually get the role of Gambit, appear in the comic panel, and on top of that, he’s actually the lead on the project, just to let it all fall apart like that. Yes, I would say he was upset about it for good reason.
I can see a lot of people saying he overreacted to being traumatized. However, as someone who has worked on several small film projects and seen them fall apart, I understand where he’s coming from. When you put in a few months of work on something that you are confident will happen, you really hope it will yield good results. However, it didn’t turn out well because it didn’t happen at all. It was months of hard work and you felt like you were flushed down the toilet and it hurt your spirits. That’s probably how Channing Tatum felt after the Gambit movie fell apart, and we can’t blame him. Heck, we can’t even blame Disney. The Gambit movie didn’t happen because Disney bought Fox and they just didn’t think a one-man movie of the character would work. Are they right? I’m a little overwhelmed by this, because on the one hand, I’d love to see Gambit on the big screen again. No disrespect to Tyler kitsch; I actually dug up his take on the real card thrower. He’s suave, dangerously sexy, and the unapologetic confidence that makes Gambit cool. But, like most of the cast of that movie, he doesn’t really get a chance to show us what he can do as a character. He had a brief moment in the spotlight, and then he was there.
It’s disappointing, but that’s okay because Channing Tatum will play Gambit in a solo Fox movie. Unfortunately, we don’t get it either. It’s kind of like the Magneto Origins movie we deserved, but never got. But unlike a potential Magneto movie, the Gambit movie is entering production. As Channing Tatum explained in an interview with Variety, they had a production office in New Orleans, the entire crew was ready, and a very enthusiastic male lead was ready to play the titular role. All this while the Gambit movie never happened. Who will not be disappointed? Now I know fans will debate whether Channing Tatum is a good fit for Gambit. However, I’d rather talk about Gambit’s idea of making a film himself. How will it work? I think it will tell the story of Remy LeBeau, from his beginnings in the Thieves Guild to his possible inclusion in the X-Men. Or maybe it will build his romance with Rogue? Interestingly, Channing Tatum actually revealed their thoughts on the film. According to him, they wanted it to be a romantic comedy superhero movie. He even used Deadpool as a reference.
But Deadpool isn’t a romantic comedy, right? lie. The Mouthful Mercenary specifically said in the narration that his movie is about love. He is right. He meets a great woman, falls in love with her, then is diagnosed with a terminal illness, decides to undergo risky surgery in order to be with her, and then he becomes a disfigured freak for accelerated healing. But you know what? He finally won her back. She accepted the way he was. If that’s not love, then I don’t know what is. Could the Gambit movie give us a love story in a similar fashion? Well, maybe not, but then again, Channing Tatum has the magic Mike essence he could have brought to the Gambit role. If he was going to make any woman fall in love with him, he might succeed. So if this movie ever happened, I’d watch it out of curiosity rather than excitement. The thing is, I still wonder if Channing Tatum has a chance to accomplish what he started. It was clearly a passionate project for him, and it’s a shame he never saw it happen. However, even if the Gambit movie never happens, I think it’s safe to say we’ll still see him in the future.
Now let’s get the entire X-Men into the MCU conversation. We know it’s going to happen eventually, and when it does, we’ll likely see Gambit. It’s just a matter of Marvel wanting Channing Tatum to officially take over the role. Honestly, I don’t think they will. He’ll do better when Channing Tatum takes the lead, but I predict Marvel will look for a less popular actor to play Cajun. This is just my theory, but as far as I know, Kevin Feige has thought of the Magic Mike star. I do sympathize with Channing Tatum, but I’m also sure there are other actors who are better suited for the role. If he does get a chance, that’s good for him. I’m curious to see what he’ll be like as Gambit, so I kind of hope that happens. Only time will tell if he actually gets the role, but we just hope it’s for the next X-Men movie. At this point, there is no need for a separate Gambit movie.
