In recent years, Red Bull’s second seat has been seen as the toxic Holy Grail.
Some of the younger drivers came, tried it out on the grid in a Red Bull or its sister car, and moved on.
However, Mexican Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez looks like he’s finally capable of taking on Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton – but he really could end in 2021 Drivers World Championship?
Perez was quick to dispel doubts about his ability to do what Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly couldn’t. Mexicans have adapted well to a Red Bull, which is not an easy car to drive.
Victory in Baku last weekend was Perez’s second of his F1 career and propelled him to third in the championship – with both Hamilton and Verstappen failing in a disappointing run. The favourites to win the championship this weekend.
But can Sergio Perez seriously think about championship glory at the end of the year?

Red Bull is arguably the most powerful all-rounder out there, and if they can use that to their advantage over Mercedes, they could finally end the Silver Arrow’s dominance of the sport.
Perez’s consistent style and ability to squeeze every last bit of speed out of his car — as well as reliability — should put him in a good position to end the season.
Even before his move to Milton Keynes, Perez already had a reputation as one of the smoothest drivers on the grid, which could help him overtake his more erratic teammates
200+ F1 career experience
Checo is one of the most experienced drivers on the track and has never really had a race-winning car under his feet.
With 201 entries (only 197 of which will be race starts), Perez has sampled just about everything F1 throws at him – on and off the track.

Saturday will be fine
Although Perez has already scored his first win for Red Bull, he needs to do better on Saturday as poor qualifying hampered his chances of the race.
Despite one or two impressive performances, Perez will need to get closer to the front lines on Saturday to have any chance of winning the title.
Until he can do that, the WDC is out of reach for him – but with a little time at Red Bull, there’s no reason he can’t be a future contender.
