Silva, who joined the Blues from Ligue 1 side PSG in August at the age of 35, arrived with many question marks over his ability to play in the top flight.

Thiago Silva is ‘one of the greatest defenders of our generation’
“Of all the signings, when he came in, I knew he was one of the greatest guards of our generation, but at 36 — you worry,” Kerr said in the Daily Star.
“Traditionally, it’s very difficult for players of that age to get into the Premier League. The Premier League is a different beast now.
“I don’t think they’re making central defenders like him right now, except for Van Dijk, who’s the best in the league, maybe arguably.”

Lampard’s firm favourite
Silva has been a solid addition to Chelsea’s backline, aside from a blunder in the league clash with West Brom.
Lampard’s side have one of the best defensive records in the competition this season, with their ten goals conceded only better than Tottenham’s nine.
The experienced defender is key to this success, and has even been given the captain’s armband on several occasions, such is his leadership from the back.

According to Cole, Silva’s performances have also been very beneficial to the rest of the Stamford Bridge centre-backs.
“For Rudiger, Zouma or Christensen next to him, he sets the standard,” Cole added.
“If you want to be a world-class central defender, that’s the level you want to be at.”
